• Description

  The fifth-born son of a samurai family in the Ōkubo clan, Goro grew up knowing nothing but the privilege and hardship of middle-ranking samurai life. Suffering variously at the hands of cruel teachers, feared lords and dirty criminal thugs, Goro became increasingly disillusioned with both his caste and lot in life.
  
  The loss of loved ones has been a common theme in his life. His wife was taken from him by mountain bandits, his mother died in his youth, and his father had practically disowned him before his heart gave out just years ago. Among his large brood of siblings, two brothers had also been killed while serving their lords; the other two were safe only because they entered a life of servitude to the message of the Buddha and the Shinto gods.
  
  With suffering seemingly unavoidable, Goro has practically given up on life. He no longer owns a kimono and hakama without a hole or stain. Even his swords are starting to lose their sheen from rust.
  
  Currently stationed as machikata yoriki (town peacekeeper) in the checkpoint village of Hiroda on the Tokaido Road, Goro keeps order under the command of a distant machi bugyo. He is practically his own boss in his daily affairs, with a small barracks of guards under his command.
  
  Goro likes to conduct his affairs from the town's few taverns and brothels, "connecting with the people under his charge," as he sometimes joked grimly. Little did he know that Hiroda was about to threaten him with the joie de vivre that only the most grizzliest of murders could bring.
