• Background

  Jenine was not always a genie.
  Thousands of years ago, when the Nile was young and the Black Lands newly inhabited, Jenine was stolen from lands far to the East to be presented to an early Pharaoh. Unspoiled and beautiful, she was intended as a gift for the royal harem, but Jenine was headstrong and yearned for her freedom. Awaiting the Pharaoh's entrance that evening, Jenine intended to commit suicide rather than to give her life and body to this heathen king-god. Unable to commit to her demise, however, she stumbled upon a rather unremarkable lamp hidden away. She rubbed some dust from its side when a handsome jinn appeared before her as though an apparition of smoke. He spoke kind words to her, offering her one wish for calling upon him.
  Jenine implored the jinn for her freedom from the Pharaoh and the jinn obliged. However, the jinn was of a malicious nature and used his confinement to only twist the requests of others for his pleasure. For her freedom, the jinn placed a heavy price. He exchanged places with her; she, the jinn, and he, the slave. Jenine wept as she was pulled into the lamp and the old jinn's laughter died away. He picked up the lamp, intending to use it to for his own desires, but in freeing himself, he had inadvertently used his own wish. The lamp faded from his grasp to be hidden, unknown, for hundreds of years.
  It was said that a handsome slave rose to the position of vizier to the Pharaoh, but the foreign slave girl was never to be found...
  
  About 800 years later, a poor thief stumbled upon an old lamp in an overhang deep within the desert. Upon rubbing it, he unleashed Jenine, who salaamed him as her master and offered to grant him three wishes, instead of just one. The thief, who longed to be lifted from his squalor, coveted a sheikh's daughter and his palace. Jenine, who rose him to the status of a prince to court the daughter, began to see the good within the thief and fell in love with him. This love was not known to the thief, who entered the palace and begged the sheikh for his beautiful daughter's hand in marriage.
  When he summoned Jenine to wish for a gift as beautiful as his bride-to-be, she confessed her love to him. The thief, torn with love for her and his promise to the sheikh's daughter, assured her that he felt the same, but spurned her affections to keep his promise. After granting his wish of a wedding present, Jenine was offered the thief's last wish as an apology. In turn, she begged him to wish her love away so that the lamp would have completed its purpose and transport her elsewhere.
  When asked why she did not simply wish for freedom, she replied, "I have never truly been free, but I may help others such as yourself, so long as this burden does not weigh upon my heart." The thief agreed and wished for her love to be forgotten.
  It was said in the near future that a young prince married a daughter of the sheikh, to surpass him as ruler.
  The jinn was hidden once again...
