  The flowing, golden mane and matching tail of this equine frames the silvery hairs of the rest of her body in such a way that it appears as though she might be glowing. Dark-brow, curious eyes dart around her unfamiliar surroundings, coming to rest for only moments at a time before rushing to examine the next object of interest. Blue, loosely-fitting wrappings cover her unflatteringly, tied to themselves in places to maintain their positions about her form.

• Setting and Species

  This section is for information relating to Lleinaar's setting, specifically with regards to the way the setting relates to the unicorns that live in it. You are not required to read anything here before RPing with this character; in fact, it's probably best if you don't, since there will probably be a lot to read before long. It exists purely to give Lleinaar's RP partners a place to look up information about her species if needed, in hopefully as organized a way as possibly so that you only have to read the parts that are important to the story of the RP.
  
  

  Unicorns

  Unicorns in Lleinaar's setting are living embodiments of life and purity, tasked with guarding the world in which they live from death and destruction. All worlds contain unicorns... or at the very least, did contain them. The unicorns of any particular world will only intervene in mortal affairs when the need is greatest, which may or may not result in their extinction; by their nature they serve the greater good, and will sacrifice themselves to preserve a realm if necessary.
  
  Despite this, to the outside world unicorns appear rare to the point that may doubt that they exist at all. Since they tend to keep mostly to themselves, with lifespans measured in scores of human generations, they are often forgotten or dismissed as myths and legends. Wherever they do appear they are symbols of luck and happiness, since a passing unicorn will aid and heal a land simply by behaving according to their nature.

  The Glade

  To the outside world, unicorns are rare, solitary creatures, living alone and guarding their own personal forests. Their magic protects their glade, maintaining the balance of the creatures inside it and overgrowing the trees themselves to make it difficult if not impossible for the outside world to enter. From the perspective of the unicorns themselves, however, each world is the home of exactly one unicorn herd. Despite being separated by perhaps thousands of miles, each unicorn glade is one part of single connected forest. If one could enter the forest of one unicorn and wander into their glade, they might find themselves on the other side of the world after leaving.
  
  The unicorn glade is in some ways a focal point for all life on the planet. It is impossible for a unicorn to be killed while in the glade, and a unicorn will only leave under two circumstances: their coming of age journey, and later as an adult should the world they are tasked to protect become threatened.

  Scouts

  At the age of two hundred fifty, a unicorn is considered to be an adult and ready to maintain a forest of their own. Five years before this age, a "young" unicorn must leave the safety of the glade and embark on a perilous journey into the realm of mortals.
  
  A scout's mission is twofold; they must find a barren, desolate land to bring back to life and eventually connect to the glade, but along the way the scout is also tasked with observing the state of mankind or whatever other mortal species the world is home to, in order to keep the herd informed on the progress of mortals: morally, magically, and technologically. If the world is threatened in a great enough way, it is also the scout's duty to report this to the herd, so that they can fulfill their duties as guardians of that realm.
  
  It is this aspect of the journey that holds the greatest risk failure; since there may be hundreds of years between scouts, mortal kind may have advanced (or fallen) quite a ways, leaving scouts ill-equipped to deal with the world beyond the glade. A hundred years could be enough for humanity to move from horsepower to spacecraft, or for an enlightened empire to collapse into a collection of barbarian tribes; there is no guarantee the world beyond will be anything like what a scout has been told to expect.
  
  Scouts travel the world in disguise and on foot (or by hoof, if they are from a world in which humanoid creatures are common enough to allow them to disguise themselves as a bipedal horselike creature rather than as a human), following the flows of life that connect the plants and animals of the natural world to each other. From an outside perspective, they appear to be wandering aimlessly, though being naturally connected to the magic of the earth, a unicorn is never truly lost.
  
  Should a scout succeed in finding the dead land they are destined to revive, the lengthy process of bringing life back into the earth begins. Though this period is relatively short in the grander scheme of a creature who's lifespan is measured in thousands of years, to the mortals the change is so slow as to be all but unnoticeable. Deserts grow into plains, and plains into forests, rain returns to parched ground and animals begin to flourish. In what may take as long as fifty years the land comes back to life. Only when this is complete does the new forest join the unicorn glade; it is not until the scout's task is complete that they can truly return home. It at this point that they are eligible to become the mate of another unicorn, though that marriage may still involve waiting for a beloved or admirer to complete their own journey.

  Scars

  Scars and Life Magic
  A unicorn's magic is based around purity, of mind, body, and spirit. For each scar a unicorns receives their magic is weakened, whether physical or emotional. Though life magic can easily remove their physical scars, scars of the mind are not so easily mended (and for a female unicorn the scar of first mating is considered sacred and forbidden to be healed). It is for this reason that a unicorn must seek their home in the mortal world before their coming of age; it is the most mature they will ever be before experiencing their first true physical and emotional scars, representing the peak of their magical ability and thus their greatest chance of surviving the journey. Or, at least, that is the explanation the old (unicorns who have survived their journey) give to the young (unicorns who have not yet become old enough to leave the glade)...
  
  Scars and The Journey
  Unicorns in Lleinaar's setting are living embodiments of life and purity; they protect, create, give, and follow life wherever they go. This uncompromisable facet of their nature leads to a paradox in a young unicorn's journey; in order to find a dead land, they must follow death and not life, which by their very nature is impossible. They cannot truly understand negative thoughts and emotions: violence and anguish, the desire of one creature to harm another, anger and hatred... all are contrary to what a unicorn is and represents. This reality leads to the painful, but necessary, hidden third purpose of the journey; the firsthand experience of tragedy and loss. Without exposure to death a unicorn can never complete their task, or recognize their purpose to that world. It is one of the grander ironies of the universe, that an enlightened guardian race can only learn darkness through the mortals they're sworn to protect.
  
  The final test of a unicorn's journey is therefore simultaneously the most simple and most difficult; whether or not they can experience tragedy and death, and yet still maintain a strong enough connection to the earth to bring part of it back to life. A unicorn that fails this task can never return to the glade, and the outside world is almost certain to destroy them eventually if they can't.

  -Lleinaar spends most of her time in an alternate form: anthropomorphic equine for furry settings and elf for traditional fantasy settings. Unless your character has a legitimate reason as to why they are able to recognize her as a unicorn (magical sense, superior racial knowledge, etc.), they should not intuitively know that she is one.
  
  -Lleinaar`s "true" form is a non-anthropomorphic winged unicorn, though she does have a third, "half state" form between that of her natural and equine forms.
  
  -Lleinaar is powerful, but only in terms of "life magic," which is relatively harmless. She has only her natural physical weapons and strength with which to defend herself.
