  • Biography

    Maris was born to a couple that had more love than money. Living on the Scotland coast in an abandoned lighthouse, life was wonderful for a few precious years. When Maris was four, she became dreadfully ill, losing her voice and spending long nights too feverish to move. Her mother, claiming that she could not take the stress of watching her baby girl die, left her father alone to 'deal with it'. She never came back.

    Maris recovered from the illness weeks later, but never spoke again. Her father took her to doctors and specialists, racking up bills that would take decades to pay, but none could solve the problem. Finally, one assured him that she was perfectly healthy and the only barrier in her way was in her head. He dismissed her as a mental case, and that was that. Her father refused to take her to see anybody else, assuring her that she was fine as she was and if she didn't want to talk, well that was just fine.

    Being mute was not easy. She managed to stay in school, though she had to endure long years of ridicule from the other children until they grew old enough to stop caring and essentially forgot that she existed. Not bothering with university, Maris simply stayed with her father, taking care of things at home and assuming that she would never know any other sort of life, despite her dreams of something beyond the ocean's horizon.
