  Marko was born in 1940, a member of a famous circus dynasty. The Negrelli family had run a circus since the late 19th century, originally touring around Europe in traditional caravans. In Marko's early years, however, operations had moved to the US.
  
  Marko was the eldest of three siblings, having two younger sisters. Although he had a close relationship with his mother, his father had a firey temper and would often physically take out his anger on his family. He left under mysterious circumstances when Marko was nine, leaving the boy terrified of his own anger and drowning in guilt that he couldn't protect his mother and sisters better.
  
  Although he was in line to inherit the circus, the teenage Marko looked set to descend into a life of gambling, depression, alcohol and womanising. Fortunately he matured enough to realise the slippery slope he was on, and helped by his family and a burgeoning friendship with Ariadne the ringmaster's daughter, he began to turn his life around.
  
  Since they had such a close bond he married Ariadne, and the two fell in love (in that order.)
