The Kirin

Masahiko is a Kirin, and as such has a particular affinity to justice and virtue. Much like its unicorn cousins present in other cultures, the Kirin is known as a symbol of purity and gentleness, and is said to be a great omen of good luck. It is also said a Kirin is gentle enough to walk upon the ground without harming a single blade of grass. However, on the flipside of this, they are also known for their strict upholding of justice and punishment of wicked people and evildoers. This is where much of Masahiko's occupation comes into play. Though most often seen in his human guise, this is not his true form, a secret which is very strictly guarded and only his closest attendants are aware of. In human form, Masahiko is in charge of overseeing the ceremony in which the region's worst criminals are to be judged for their deeds. There is a chain of command that goes along with this, and Masahiko is but one of the many subjects who oversees such functions. His duty is merely to judge the souls that are brought forth to him, and from there the job is taken over by any number of soul guardians in the Underworld, who are in charge of seeing that said souls end up in their rightful place. After announcing his final verdict, Masahiko removes himself from the ceremony and retreats to his private quarters to summon the Kirin, as it is said that his witnessing the events to follow could have disastrous consequences. With his private quarters under the strict watch of his trusted attendants, Masahiko is then free to return to his true form to exact the death penalty upon any wrongdoers that are sentenced to such.
