• At a glance

  The stallion was a typical Avoirdupois specimen--tall, broad-shouldered, square-muzzled and sinuous, built like a triangle on tree trunk legs. His hands were large enough to encompass lesser heads, and strong enough to crush them like grapes, calloused from his sword's hilt; his handshake was confident and masculine, with just enough strength to suggest that there was much, much more of that that he could apply, if need be. He wore lightweight, simple clothes, which was at odds with his clearly aristocratic physique.
  
  His coat was well-groomed, chestnut in colour, mainly brown and ranging to reddish. A flowing mane of dark brown, almost black, hair was gathered into a long ponytail, close to the top of his head, and a closely-trimmed moustache and a broad goatee occupied his face. Blue eyes watched the world with comfortable ease; usually he had a disarmingly cheerful grin. But there, invisible to those who did not know to look, behind the puppy-dog eyes and slightly goofy smile, was a wall of steel.

  Varius is an aristocratic son in the house of Sabot, but is so far behind in the line of House Avoirdupois' succession he can't see it with a telescope. His immediate family owns a small estate in the countryside, which is all he has to look forward to in his later years, but he has no interest in dealing with petty squabbles among country gentry or running the (relatively) tiny manor. Taking to the sea aboard a small two-masted caravel, paid for out of his own pocket, he has set out to carve out an interesting life as a corsair and adventurer.
  
  He does not normally make a show of his ancestry, and does not actually wear his signet ring, preferring to keep it tied around his neck.
