  The Kirin (or Qilin) is a chimeric mythological creature with origins in East Asia. There are many depictions and variations of them, some more like unicorns, others like dragons. Each Kirin is individual and can appear very different to the others, though all share the same common roots. Xiurong's traits are as follows:

  • 'Gemstone' Appearance: 'Rong, like most Kirin, has scales rather than skin or fur. They are very smooth, more like a fish than a dragon's, and whilst the majority of them are black in colour, she is subject to mottled blues and turquoise down her spine, across her shoulders, around the edges of her face and over her hips. The bright contrast against black can often give the illusion of embedded gemstones.
  • Species Combination: In a bid to understand the physical composition of the Kirin, many animals have been referenced in order to describe their appearance. Some are mentioned as being more like an ox, others like a deer, and some almost identical to a unicorn or dragon. 'Rong can be described as having the antlers of a dragon, cloven hooves and long ears like a doe, the tail of a lion and the scales of a fish. Had she been male, she would also have sported a lion-like mane.
  • Elemental Alignment: Lore dictates that most Kirin are of flame, though this isn't necessarily true of all of the species. In 'Rong's case, this remains true, though the fire she creates is typically abnormal in that it is, like her colouring, a combination of black, blue and turquoise.
  • Smell a Lie: Kirin are thought to be able to detect both lies and the truth. 'Rong has honed this ability down to a fine art, and it is often misinterpreted as a form of magic. In truth, it is a natural bend towards observing others and knowledge of minute changes in body language.
  • Benevolence and Justice: So the tales go, the Kirin are harbingers of wrath against wickedness. However, like other species, this isn't a given. 'Rong is frequently gentle and has a natural preference for order, but those traits come from who, not what, she is.

  Kirin Years

  Kirin live for very long periods of time, often for thousands of years if their longevity is uninterrupted by injury, fatal illness or violence. 'Rong is very young by their standards, and whilst she does class as an adult, she still has a great deal of growth to go through.

  
  
  

  The Hole

  'Rong's faith in higher powers has led her to believe that the violence of humanity cannot be diffused. Her experience of humans is a brutal one, and she no longer trusts even the neutral parties to be able to suppress their primitive urges. Despite a preference for pacifism, she believes that humans are beyond saving. She views this with a great deal of sadness, but finds herself unable to extricate herself from her feelings on the matter. If a human is killed, she has much the same compassion as she might if she were putting a dying pet down; the illness of humanity is inhumanity, and it is a kindness to prevent them from suffering their own pain any longer.
