Brief History:
Iudex XIV, whose true name is long forgotten, was once known as the fourteenth divine Prince of a paladin empire, now crumbled and long lost to the winds. Deep history witnessed him lead a vast army against the rising dark, resulting in a grand yet short-lived victory for his keepers. Though the abyss had been levelled, the effect of the carnage had snatched something precious from Iudex and his brethren, and time saw the gradual whittling of the Prince's morality.
His once beloved empire began to fall, as all empires must, and the many Princes quarrelled without a monarch to defend nor law to enforce. A bitter argument resulted in blood as Iudex's true, brooding from erupted from his body.
"I shall regard their cries as braying steeds, waiting to be whipped, broken, and bridled."
Fearing the sudden rise of Iudex as much as the abyss itself, the neighbouring kingdoms of old intervened. Iudex and his army met many in battle with nought else but a bloody end, though the carnage ceased on the ninetieth day of his rampage. In the midst of slaughter, Iudex was met with the blinding light of a fabled mirror, sealing his body and soul within the greatsword he carried so religiously. His rage and hatred had been sealed along with him, and he remained conscious within his unsightly prison. It was an act he would never learn to forgive.
For centuries he writhed within steel, never settling from his lucid nightmare. His vessel had been cast into the riverbed, waiting impatiently for unwise hands to grasp its hilt.
And so they did. Carried by a champion of the new age, the possessed blade reaped the lives of many in battle once more. One by one, Iudex swallowed their essence, and the sword's heart swelled to life. So chaotic was the battle that the dear champion failed to notice the gentle whispers emanating from the blade, nor the flesh which grew from its hilt and swallowed his arm. When the beast finally did awaken, the opposing armies screamed and fled, faltering in the shadow of the behemoth who butchered them indiscriminately. Iudex knew no allegiance in this new world, and pent-up hatred was relieved - if only slightly - by the blood-stained field on which he was reborn.
Thus the tyrant rose, ruling over a land known as Lordlex with an unrelenting fist, birthing fear and executing his immense appetite for blood and conquering.
Appearance:
One should not be so foolish as to believe that the guise of Iudex remains static. Iudex's true body takes the silhouette of an immense, winged demon, standing at a heavy eleven feet and donning a crown of ashen horns. Dire features are set with burning eyes, and a rugged jaw is lined with carnivorous teeth. Armor is formed naturally by a chitin-like exoskeleton, broken up by fiery veins and bearing shallow scratches from countless battles. Though phenomenally strong, such a body is not always convenient, and Iudex has thusly mastered the methods of suppression.
By pushing pieces of himself back into his blade, Iudex is able to reduce himself to slightly more modest appearance, settling his height below seven feet and instead displaying features resembling both his ancient self and the champion whose body he had kindly claimed. Dark hair hangs past his shoulders, often plaited and partially hidden by the presence of both headdresses and his horns. Grey flesh is pulled tightly over defined muscles and a sharp face, forever set with eyes of a burning amber. As an extension of his soul, the blade's glamour also fluctuates, suiting itself better to Iudex's current gait.
Keeping his fragments in check is a tedious task, and his essence has been known to leak from his sword and back into his body, resulting in slight but noticeable changes in his appearance. Bouts of anger and excitement are common catalysts for these changes.
Personality:
An undying force of ambitious rage, executed in the form of pillaging and expansion. Iudex's poetic words cast a melodic veil over his dark deeds, and his hunger for power never wanes. Though outwardly cruel, Iudex's old self is present in the way in which he enforces law, bringing justice upon his own people with the same degree of wrath he inflicts upon his enemies. Those who dare conspire against him are met with dire consequence, as the tyrant feeds greedily upon betrayers.
Iudex seemingly displays great pity towards human-kind and their close kin, deeming them fragile and unworthy of the power they hold. Though this opinion is carved in stone, it often wanes when presented with an iron will. A strong mind and unwavering desire to live is often admired by Iudex, who knows nothing bar his own suffering.
