Death's Origin

  When the world was new and the gods had just created man, they were only few. The gods decided that they would give man some of their power to allow them to help maintain the world they lived in. This is when man was given magic. The magic of man was limited to the elements and their variations. This was to allow man to make their own weather, their own seasons and to shape their own world the way in which they wanted it.
  
  As mankind was few, it was easy for the gods to keep them in check. However, there was one individual whose curiousity had caused him to develop his magic in new ways in secret. His name was Death. While the base magic was used to control the world and its seasons, Death experimented by merging different elemental magic. This did not satisfy him, however, and his experiments became more and more complex.
  
  As man in those days lived eternally, Death’s curiousity led him to try and end that. He experimented often and gradually tainted the magic he was granted. Eventually, the magic became so tainted that it allowed him to do what he desired: take away life from man.
  
  When the gods had become aware of this, they were conflicted. Some were pleased with the creativity of mankind, while others were afraid that the man would somehow evolve his magic to be able to take life from the gods. The gods then met and decided to turn Death into a god and take magic away from mankind. The only other men gifted with magic that were still able to use it became demigods which controlled the seasons and the weather.
  
  Upon his promotion to godliness, Death was tasked with taking away life from man, but to cancel out the loss is mankind’s population, the gods gifted them with the ability to repopulate. Without magic and no longer everlasting, mankind came to fear Death more than anything.
  
  After some time had passed, Death grew tired of being feared. He also took note of the horrible ways which man had treated each other. As a response to both of these things, Death created two versions of life after mortality. One of these was a paradise in which the souls taken by Death could live in happiness, while the other was torment which would torture the souls for eternity. He would judge each soul he had taken individually and determine which afterlife they were worthy of. Those who lived what he considered a good life would go to the paradise, while those who were horrible in live would be placed in the torment for eternity. With the creation of the paradise and torment, some men grew to embrace Death while other hated him more than ever before.
