  Maxine Parker didn't have a rough life.. she was just a rough kid.
  
  She grew up in a small town, in a small family, on a small farm.. and she hated every minute of it.
  
  The black sheep of her family, she was always the wild child. Always getting herself into trouble, getting into fights just to make things interesting, always sneaking away to the next big town over to have some fun with the kids from the bigger schools.
  
  Her father was a farmer and her mother was a school teacher. Her younger sister was more popular then she was despite being a year younger and always had dreams of growing up, marrying the captain of the football team and living off of being the Queen of Corn in a small southern town in Kentucky.
  
  Maxine was far from anything like that.
  
  She didn't want to help on the farm, she didn't have dreams of growing up in the same small town, going to the local college an hour away and coming back to live out her days. So, when Max was seventeen, she got herself kicked out of school, took her GED test, hopped on the back of the motorcycle of her 'bad boy' boyfriend and with a letter to her parents and a tear in her sisters eye, they were off for the West Coast.
  
  Max and this guy didn't last long. In fact, she rarely lasted with anyone. The guy on the motorcycle.. Seth? They were together about six months after they got to California. Enough time for Maxine to pick up smoking more then recreationally and for her to find out he was a jerk who wanted the blonde bimbette's on the beach.
  
  Not Max. She wanted a simple life. She got a job at a surf shack on the beach part time and another job at a skate shop on the pier the rest of the time. She didn't mind working two jobs. It paid the bills for her crappy little studio apartment but the apartment had the most amazing view right there on the ocean.
  
  Eventually she got Alpha, her pup companion. She had brought him surfing, he ran beside her when she bladed down the pier.. the only time he didn't come with her was when she was picking up some guy that was horrible for her at one of the local bars and clubs.
  
  She had been sneaking into bars since she arrived. But now that she's 22, it didn't involve any sneaking. Max had this horrible habit of picking up the tough guys. Guys who looked gorgeous but didn't mind giving her a shiner at two in the morning when she was ready to head home and not take them with or at 7 in the morning when she kicked them to the curb after a night. Yeah.. that's when Alpha was there to bite their butts out the door.
  
  She had her fair share of abuse. Black eyes, broken wrists, burn scars on her hips. It's like she was looking for trouble to make her feel alive..
  
  She didn't do drugs though. No, she never went there. Never wanted to. Besides she didn't actually have a death wish and she was healthy, active.. despite the excess drinking and smoking. She had a chip on her shoulder the size of Kentucky and all she wanted to do was live her life. Constantly with the voice of her mother in her ear..
  
  "Why can't you be more like your little sister.."
  
  And the voice of her father..
  
  "You are such a disappointment"
  
  And the voice of her sister..
  
  "Can't you tone it down? You're embaressing."
  
  No.. she was here on her own, just her and the sunset, everyday.
