Yu Yan is the third daughter of Emperor Yu and only daughter to the Royal Queen so she is highly favored in Court and next in line to the throne unless a son is born. Yu Yan's two older sisters Yu Shu and Yu Zhilan are daughters of Consort Ruolong. A third daughter, Lu fan, was the result of the King's nightly urges with a Palace maid and therefore not even acknowledge by Him.
Yu Yan has always gotten what she wants. Spoiled since birth, she expect everyone to do as she says and they usually do. Whenever she is told no she is rather set back and becomes very upset either throwing a tantrum or just pouting until she finally gets her way
Her actions are seen as spoiled and high maintenance however Yu Yan is very intelligent. Taught by top scholars she is well verse in medicine and politics. She also has learn to handle many instruments, her favorite being the Erhu. Other talents include singing and dancing, needle work and cooking
