FOLLOW YOUR DREAM
AT ALL COSTS ________________ Caleb Sumner was born on the west coast, New York to be exact. He was the youngest son of Carol Sumner and Abraham "Abe" Sumner, him a raising star within the local police force. His older brother, Richard, was only a few years older, but they would prove to grow into completely different people rather quickly. As their mother stayed home to raise the two sons, the boys were told from an early age that they could be anything they want ― but that their parents preferred certain career choices for them anyway. It was even worse than simply being told what to be. They pretended that they could freely choose what to do, but in the eyes of their parents succes and happiness were measured in how much one made and the power you gained from that. You had to have influence, but the right kind of influence. While Richard seemed to thrive in that environment, Caleb quickly proved to be a difficult one. He didn't like following the rules imposed by his parents, whether it was a curfew, doing your homework, or behaving well during their annoying dinner parties. Caleb never really got that until later, as he thought his dad was just a policeman, but politics was apparently inevitable. He found it boring and would rather spend the time in his room or in the kitchen watching the hired chefs, as they were just more fun than his annoying, perfect brother and the fake laughs from the living room. This was where he first became acquainted with the culinary world. His mother did cook, but they were never allowed to be a part of that, but here he could watch everything. In the beginning, he could only watch, which he gladly did ― this was some of the only times that he could actually stay still, concentrate, and not say a word. As they continued to hire the same chefs as the parties grew in frequency, Caleb was allowed to taste, stir, and participate just a bit more, and a love was planted within him. Choosing the path to become a chef was definitely not something that his parents approved of, but they didn't say a word. They didn't have to, though, as their expressions said enough. They couldn't say no to him applying to work at restaurants as soon as he could, even if he couldn't do much but wash the dishes to begin with being so young, but he quickly began getting experience in the kitchen. His parents probably preferred it if he had studied as intensely as his brother, but he didn't care, academia was definitely not the road he wanted to go down either way, so it would be a waste of time. Money, though, he needed to get where he wanted, which was of course Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. French classes in school was really what he cared about when it came to school, and since his parents had a rather large college fund set up for him, he saw no issues with that dream. The issue of course came when he had to finally decide, where his parents did all they could to make him go in another direction. His brother was studying law, so why not choose something similar? This caused somewhat of a rift in the family, but nonetheless he ended up getting accepted and left for France. It's been a few years since Caleb came back from Paris. After graduating, he chose to stay in the city to further his restaurant experience. He might have done extremely well at the school, but that did not mean that he was ready to work as a certified chef, since that proved to be something quite else. He loved it though, even the horrible pressure, even climbing the ladder and gaining not only experience, but reputation. This made it easy for him to return home to New York and quickly land himself a job at one of the most popular restaurants in the city. He somehow managed to keep both a professional and a social life, which also meant meeting Joshua, which he began dating quickly after their first meet. Yet another detail that his parents weren't the biggest fans of, his sexuality, but he stopped caring about their opinion of him a long time ago. Now, they live together after they've dated for six years, going on seven, and while he still has a bad habit of forgetting any kind of important day, he'd say that they're going strong. The apartment, which he has paid for, is huge, he's a souschef, doing something he loves, and he can easily provide anything they need, so what's not to like? They both have careers, so they might not see each other as much as they used to, but it's been like that for so long that he's sure that this is it. |
○ D I S C I P L I N E D
adj. | dis·ci·plined Marked by or possessing discipline. While Caleb hasn't always displayed discipline, it is something he has grown into as he has found the path that he wanted to follow. He learnt that he had to stay disciplined to get to the goal that he wanted to achieve, so he had to change course and get himself together. Now, he can easily be described as possessing quite the discipline as well as being extremely determined and detail-oriented ― when it comes to work. It is, unfortunately, something that is mainly displayed in the kitchen, not in his personal life. |
○ I M A G I N A T I V E
adj. | imag·i·na·tive Having the skill and imagination to create new things. Caleb has always been creative, even if his parents never really acknowledged it as anything. He sees in shapes and colours, which is something he uses to enhance his performance in the kitchen, as it all translates easier with a bit of imagination. He likes to come up with creative solutions, not just in terms of food, but in life. He doesn't want to be bored, he could care less about norm and what one ought to do. He wants to do what seems right to him, which is often exciting and different than what others would expect. |
○ K I N D H E A R T E D
adj. | kind·heart·ed Having or marked by sympathy and consideration for others. Caleb is really a kindhearted guy, but even then his heart is not always in the right place. He truly means well, he wants to make others around him happy, but he is also easily blinded by this. He is too quick at assuming what people want from him, what will make them happy, and as soon as he has made up his mind, it is hard for him to turn away from that; and then he might miss clear signs that eventually will leave him hurt, because he himself ended up hurting someone. He is very focused on performing well, as he currently believes that that will make others around him happy and that only by performing well will they care about him. |
○ H A B I T U A L
adj. | ha·bit·u·al Regularly or repeatedly doing, practising, or acting in some manner. This is something that has come to Caleb within the last three years or so. Where he is extremely innovative in the kitchen, it is almost like he uses up all of this imagination and as soon as he gets home, he would rather have the same as always. He likes that things are as they are currently and he sees little to no reason to change it. He still wants to advance in his field, but he is comfortable in his personal life and everyone around him seem to be content as well, so he doesn't see a reason to make a big deal out of it. Things are the same, but same is good, same means safe and secure. |
