Elena García Vega

Although the daughter of Borja Félix García Vega, a member of the Cobán Cartel, Elena García Vega did not grow up in splendor. Her father was the youngest among three brothers, and never quite took well to the drug trade his two older brothers so eagerly leaped into. He was their spy, for the most part. They sent him off to wherever they planned to make moves, or to whichever place he could scout competing business routes from. While in Panama working, he met Alejandra Carillo, and they married just 2 months after. Soon after, Alejandra was pregnant with Elena, and their first and only child came to the world in Panama City.

Marijuana, Cocaine and Opium - all of these substances would regularly flow through the mountains of Guatemala, thanks to Elena’s uncles and their associates. The Colombians sent the goods, and her family in the Cobán Cartel ensured it all made it safely across the Mexican border where the Sinaloa Cartel waited. This insurance of these goods involved everything from the use of force to bribes and extortion.

When Elena was just 3 years old, her father was killed in one of the many disagreements between the Cobán Cartel and the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel. He was shot in the restaurant the meeting had taken place in, and his death was never investigated.

After Borja’s death, Alejandra distanced herself from the cartel with the blessing of his brothers. To their luck, they did not carry much interest for her or her little daughter at the time. This meant that Elena got to grow up away from the criminal ventures of her family. She went to public school and had to work early morning shifts at a café to save up money to go to university. She always knew about the drug trafficking within her family, however. It was boorishly obvious whenever she’d see her father’s family. They lived in mansions, wore gold watches and drove expensive cars. It was just the way things were, and neither the government nor the police seemed to care.
