Charlotte often appears permanently bored, distant, distrained of everything, and has a general distaste for everything with a touch of sultry sensuality. However she is also caring, kind and generous. She has a secretive nature, calm most of the time but has a short fuse. She is fiercely protective when children are involved, nurturing when speaking to them.

📚 Backstory 📚



Childhood:


Charlotte was born to an unwed Italian-Greek immigrant mother, Amelia Maze and her Irish-American Father, John, who was in and out of her life. She was raised Roman Catholic by Amelia for the majority of her life, even going to an all girls boarding school from a young age. Most of the time, It was just her and her mother, who worked as a waitress, midwife and other odd jobs to keep them afloat.


When her father was around, he was secretive but adoring to both of them. John worked “oddity” jobs for the church, magician, occult detective who maintained an anti-social con artist gangster air about himself and spoiled them with luxury items from time to time. Amelia never bothered to know what John did for a living, just that she had a roof over her and Lettie’s head and the girl wasn’t going hungry.


John adored his daughter and tried to do his best to keep her safe. Secretly, John taught her warding and magic. He believed her when she first spoke up about seeing things that other people couldn’t see. Amelia tried to raise Lettie as a respectable, sensible, conservative and religious young girl, even while John was viewed as an odd man, a ruthless cunning liar, cynic, deadpan snarker, and a cheat.


Adolescence:


Lettie wasn’t very popular, nor had she ever wanted to be. She was a friendly child though, scared of very little and both book and street smart. She’d always had somewhat of a sixth sense about things, along with an acute ability to see things that most couldn’t. She was bullied for being quirky, because of these growing abilities and minor trouble that she’d get into because of them.

Once such time, Lettie almost drowned in the pond of a local greenhouse that was attached to her father’s most frequent church after she fell from a metal balcony railing. This was the last time she’d have such an experience with Death in general but it was a start, or awakening of her abilities growth.


The second time, happened when she was 12, an accident at a public pool when an older child pushed her into the deep end. She was legally dead for 3 minutes, in which she saw heaven, hell and the Dreaming for the first time.


Young Adulthood:


As she got older, she picked up on some of John’s bad habits, like exploring places she didn’t need to be, lock picking, con artist tricks, rites. Lettie would often find ways to disrupt her parents' overly religious lives, but took the most after John’s more occult work and lawless lifestyle. She caused trouble at school hustling other girls out of their allowances, sneaking about in places she wasn’t supposed to be, fighting, and stealing. Her whole happy demeanor was broken by the pool incident. Only John seemed to understand what she’d been through, however, her mother pushed her into the church and more into an unaccepting religion where she was treated harshly and bad for her behavior.


Lettie’s love for the Occult was started because of her father, and only grew more after her near-death experience. Her mother frowned on the things that her father went on to teach her, while he played off that it was just nonsense to appease Amelia. However John disappeared during a job around her 16th birthday, which just drove her farther into it. This was also around the time that her other worldly connections started, as one of them reached out to advise her of what her father really did for a living. Lettie broke into his secret study to learn the truth. She learned of his real job, and the tie between herself, John and the underground world of the occult and demonology.


Lettie wanted to follow in his footsteps ever since, growing her abilities in hopes that she’d find her father again. Even when her mother gave up on him ever coming back, Lettie knew it wasn’t because he didn’t want to. Weirder things started happening around them, and while the Church wouldn’t let someone as young as her take up his job, it didn’t keep her from learning how from the same people he had worked with. Lettie learned that John didn’t have a lot of friends however, and his acquaintances were often other worldly and strange themselves. Lettie closed herself off farther from others as well, finding that most of the people that knew John knew very little about him, but also because without her Father, she felt totally alone in the world.



For a while, Lettie tried to maintain a normal life, while living under her mother’s roof. Even so much as taking up a part-time job at the same diner that her mother worked at. Amelia had become hyper aware of the dangers her daughter was getting into and being a mother, tried to find ways to deter Lettie from that lifestyle. Hoping that if she met the right person or had someone else to focus on, that she wouldn’t chase the ghost of her father’s job. It wasn’t about to work, but Amelia was persistent. Charlotte kept decent grades in school, all the way until graduation. Lettie denounced her mother’s beliefs after high school, feeling like she’d never been accepted there anyway, she found faith in many different ones from her father’s books. Decided to go into law, so that she could be a private investigator. The hopes that she could use that to do what her father had done legally.



Adulthood:


Charlotte left her mother’s home shortly after her 20th birthday, after having a heated agreement about her father and her plans for life. Her mother having tried to set her up with several “conservative” men from her church which Lettie had no interest in. Finally having had enough, since her mother had proved time and time again that she didn’t understand or care about Lettie’s views and values, she had snapped at her mother and left, taking only what she could pack up on quick notice and what little money she had saved. At first staying in hotels, she took on odd jobs where she could while still in college for criminal justice.


Putting distance between herself and her mother was hard but too much strife had come between them since her father’s disappearance. She still sends money back to her mother to keep up the bills, and a letter from time to time so that Amelia knows she’s alive. With all the odd things that seem to follow her, Lettie doesn’t regret moving out.


Present Day:


Presently, Lettie travels as an Occult detective, following rumors and other-worldly clues to do her father’s work which is solving problems with spirits, demons and occult troubles. Sometimes, moonlighting as a waitress or other odd jobs, or hustling for money.
