The world was not always kind, and hearts were not always pure---

The line is poetry, of course, Arthur would tell you with a serious look, it does not encompass the depth of humanity. But it was a line that started all the stories he heard growing up on his fathers knee. A father that grew up with a sword in his hand, and put one in his son's. It was a life that provided, so his father didn't see anything wrong with it. His father believed that he served, and the world was made better under the command of their king. Their king was just, fair.

Maybe he was. Maybe as every man, the king was fallible and imperfect in the end. What Arthur saw -- what he became in service to the kings direction -- was something unjust. His sword was commanded to do ill, and in the end, he paid dearly for it. Not just nearly his life, but ultimately his soul.

Second chances are not things to take lightly, and he doesn't. Even though it meant severing the connection to his home, his father, his mother -- everything he had known. He is dedicated to the messy business of justice, and his sword is only to be drawn for the good of all. It is complicated, but a complicated life is better than one rotted by guilt, shame, and remorse.
