Variance of The Pure One

DISCLAIMER: this section is supposed to give you an idea of what she can do, but it's not a comprehensive list of all her abilities.

• Life Guardian: can magically connect to any non-Corruption living being, the target of the binding is called "The Protected", the connection has unlimited range, can only connect to one creature at a time, the process of binding is simple but both parties must be consensual and within arm's reach, the connection is broken if any of the two parties dies, the connection can be broken by her at any time but if The Protected is not consensual the process will leave her with heavy exhaustion.
  
• Blindness: completely blind, can't see anything, not even shapes nor distinguish light from darkness.
  
• Magilocation: the sense that replaces her sight, magilocation allows her to always be aware of everything within 30m / 100ft range around with extreme precision, but only the outline and texture, the detection is hindered by obstacles and even more by certain materials, cannot perceive light and by extension colors, while asleep the range reduces to 3m / 10ft. Always senses where The Protected is regardless of range and conscious state.
  
• Magilocation Focus: by focussing on a specific direction the range of magilocation can extend up to 1000m / 3300ft, but can only perceive in the focussed direction, an extended use of this ability will debilitate the user with exhaustion and magic starvation.
  
• Empathic Sense: can feel the shallow emotions of any living being within her magilocation range, but everyone experiences emotions in a different way thus she can't tell the exact emotion a creature is feeling before knowing them better, although she has quite the experience and can always make an educated guess.
  
• Empathic Connection: if she has a Protected, she can feel their deeper and true emotions, share the burden of negative feelings and cheer together the positive ones. The Protected can also feel Variance's emotions and tap in her powers, if the bond is strong enough The Protected can even perceive what Var perceives through Magilocation.
  
• Half-Winged: unlike full angels, she cannot fly, but can cast a temporary wing made of white light to compensate the missing one, granting flight for a limited time.
  
• Vessel of The Pure One: staves off Corruption, instinctively despises any Corruption creature, can sense and purify Corruption effortlessly but is more susceptible to corruption magic, being corrupted and her abilities are weakened on corrupted ground. If she has a Protected the weaknesses to Corruption are nullified.
  
• Major Magic Proficencies: Faith, Hallow, Healing, Protection.
  
• Expiation: can focus an immense ammount of faith magic on a target within her magilocation range, burning them in a column of light, but inflicts magic starvation on the user.

Variance is very shy at first, you'll rarely find her showing off her angelic features in public, usually hiding both her halo and wing, looking like a normal girl, except for the black blindfold always covering her eyes, which, followed by her above average beauty, is her most prominent feature.
Her shyness fades away when perceiving someone in need for help, she is going to immediately try and offer her aid but still in a discreet manner, not immediately exposing her angelic nature, if possible she'd prefer to always hide her halo and wing, the main reason being attention: to her being at the center of a crowd's attention is a huge embarassment; another reason is her purity, many enjoy to corrupt purity, not just demons, Var's purity and (apparent) naivety is like sweet honey for hungry hornets, ready to inject their venom and taint her pure heart... but malice isn't the only thing after her, the past is too, she wronged a host of angels, she had different beliefs while borrowing their light and she's expected to be executed, theft is sin afterall.

Variance's altruistic nature lets her meet a number of different creatures, most of them are just passers by and their meeting is just ephemeral, but in her travels she may find someone similar to her, altruistic and kind or perhaps brave, willing to put others before themselves. Var takes interest in such individuals, following them, sometimes as and adventurer companion sometimes in secret, if she deems them worthy they will become her Protected, to be Variance's Protected doesn't imply any feeling other than a common goal and an altruistic soul, a will to restore others' withered emotions, blooming them into positive feelings, ideally happiness.

Variance is a worshipper of a forgotten divinity called The Pure One, with only very few devotees left and maybe only Var as its (half)angel, most of the teachings have been lost to time, only three are commonly accepted within the few followers:

1. "Thou shalt course the capital virtues for they are Purity."
2. "Thou shalt course thy own Purity."
3. "Thy arrant foe shalt be The Taint."

The first teaching is straightforward, meaning to not only reject deadly sins, but also follow the capital virtues: Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Kindness, Patience, Humility, all of them are present in a way or another in Var's character.
The second teaching is open to interpretation, to follow ones' own purity, in Var's case it means to spread positive emotions, since to her they are purity.
The thrid teaching is rather straightforward in concept but there's still room to interpretation, it says that "Corruption is your absolute enemy" but how should the followers treat such enemy? should the Corruption be completely purged? should it be limited? perhaps converted to purity? is just pure corruption the enemy or anything that has traces of corruption?
These questions are answered individually among the followers of The Pure One, but Variance isn't a common worshipper, she is a vassal of the divinity's faith, thus the thrid teaching has an effect on her behaviour: she instincively despises any Corrupted creature, she won't feel the altruistic need to help a Corruption creature, instead she'd rather ignore them or maybe make it even worse... but it's just an instinct, Var can overcome that instinct with enough will power and potentially help the corrupted being, although this may incurr in side effects for her faith may be shaken.

At the present Variance doesn't have a place to call "home", instead she wanders around, jumping from small villages to metropolises, looking for a safe place to stay and to do what she does best: helping others. Unfortunately her past always manages to catch up to her, may it be the angels of Randiance themselves or various bounty hunters in their stead, the fact that helping so many eventually makes rumors of her spread doesn't aid her hiding, but she's too kind for her own good and will still help others even if it puts her in danger.
When Var is forced to face her past, she usually tries to flee or just talk it out, avoiding fighting at all costs, to hurt others is just not in her nature, when there's no other option she will try to debilitate them, but still, she has unwillingly killed and the thought pains her but she doesn't feel regret, regret is sin afterall.

Variance of The Pure One, her full name is quite a mouthful isn't it? it used to be Variance of The Immaculate One which is even longer! x_x
Well that's because I like giving some sort of meaning to a name or the structure of a name, in Var's case it's the latter.
In my world angels have as their surname (it's really more of a title) the name of the divinity they worship, that's why she has such a long full name!

Var draws inspiration from many sources, the most obvious one is guardian angels! I really wanted to make a character with the ability to make a special connection with another one, I called her "class" Life Guardian because... guardian angel is too restrictive, what if I wanted to make an elf life guardian? or a demon life guardian? demon guardian angel doesn't sound right, does it now?

I thought a lot on how the connection between a Life Guardian and The Protected works, in the end I decided that there are few basic rules but the effects depends on the Life Guardian. Another thingie that floated in my mind was: "what happens if The Protected dies? would the Life Guardian suffer from some sort of recoil?" in Var's case nothing special happens, the connection is just broken... why? thanks for asking!
The reason is her altruistic nature: if she was to be punished for the death of The Protected then would she protect them just to avoid the punishment? no, but I think it's a fair argument, plus the pain, guilt and grief she'd feel would be enough of a punishment.

Another inspiration for Variance, or rather her abilities, comes from a fleeting interaction I had some time ago, the context is that silly game of "you choose a power but the next person chooses a drawback", for my power I wanted "to feel others' emotions" but the drawback was "but you are blind". The idea to see what others can't, but can't see what others can was really interesting to me, so much that I made a whole character around that concept, but note that Var's blindness has nothing to do with her power to feel others emotions, she was always able to feel others emotions (when she was still an elf, not angelic in any way) and then she became blind for backstory reasons.
