Solenya was born beneath a blackened sky, on the day the moon devoured the sun. The eclipse came unannounced and lingered longer than the elders had ever recorded. As the forest fell into unnatural dusk, birds ceased their song and the wind held its breath. When the labor began, the midwives wept quietly—not from fear, but because they already understood what the child would be. Her mother bled out before naming her, and no one ever spoke of the father. The villagers, rooted in old fears, did not celebrate her birth. Instead, they whispered.

Marhys, the healer, took the infant in. She raised Solenya with the grim patience one gives to wild herbs or half-tamed beasts—not cruelly, but carefully, always braced for the bite. Even as a toddler, Solenya moved differently. She watched shadows. She spoke late, and when she did, it was in fragmented truths: dreams others had not yet dreamt, names of people who hadn’t arrived, or rains that hadn’t fallen. Her first seizure struck at five. By seven, she could not enter the chapel without the air turning sour. By eight, she had stopped pretending not to see the things others couldn’t.

The village said little, but the signs were plain. She was one of them—a Seer. Not by blood, but by circumstance. Born during eclipse and disaster. Marked by something beyond understanding. The world had seen others like her before: women across ages and nations who bore the weight of prophecy in their bones. Their visions came like storms—violent, unasked for, and agonizing. Solenya was no different. Her body twisted with revelation. Her mind blurred from proximity to too much knowing. After each episode, she awoke hollow-eyed, tasting iron and fog, her fingers trembling as if from a dream too large to hold.

The world had roles for such children. Some were kept behind veils and gilded doors, used by kings and councils. Others were exiled or worshipped, feared or discarded. Their names were rarely remembered—only their warnings. And none of them, not in the deepest records or hidden texts, had ever found what Solenya did.

She wasn’t searching when she found the shard.

It was instinct that carried her into the forest one sleepless night, barefoot and silent. The trees did not bar her path. They bent. The grove was unfamiliar, yet she felt it recognize her. There, nestled in moss like something asleep, was the shard—smooth, glowing faintly with a light that felt more remembered than seen. She did not know what it was, only that it was waiting. When she reached for it, the world inhaled.

It passed into her like breath into fire.

What followed wasn’t transformation—it was escalation. Her visions sharpened. Her seizures grew longer, deeper, their wake trailing frost or heat in the air. Sometimes she would speak in forgotten dialects, or not at all for days. Reflections warped around her. She began to see futures not in fragments but in entire moments, lived and relived before they ever arrived. The animals no longer just followed—they watched her as if awaiting instruction. The forest listened.

The shard had not replaced her nature. It had amplified it. She had been a Seer before. Now she was something beyond what the title had ever meant. And though no one said it aloud, even Marhys began to look at her differently—like someone standing too close to a storm’s eye, uncertain which way the wind would break.

She was not the first child born beneath an eclipse, nor the first to suffer the burden of sight. But she is the only one known to have been touched by the shard. The only one to carry a fragment of something ancient and unspeaking inside her. The Seers warned of calamities. Solenya may one day become one.

And the longer she walks the edge between what is and what should never be, the louder the world begins to listen.
