Collected here are the many, many origin stories of Indigo Clardmond. Are any of them the truth? Are none of them the truth? Or perhaps, somehow, are they ALL the truth?

  Scenario A

  
  Indigo was born a few millennia ago as the youngest son of the illustrious demonic estate of the Clardmond dynasty. As was custom for all younger male siblings, Indigo's natural wings and horns were surgically removed to indicate his inferior status and curb all violent, ambitious urges. This worked for approximately five minutes before somehow the newborn imp, without any conscious thought or effort, was able to replace them with bizarre, jewel-like appendages based off some of the rich trinkets they had hung over his face to distract him from the procedure.
  
  Worried over the many potential threats and problems such power at an early age could mean, Indigo's elder brother first tried to have him killed. The young imp resisted all forms of murder, however, often failing to recognise he had been harmed in any way at all, smiling happily and enjoying the 'games' his family were playing with him. So his brother decided the best course of action would be to lock him in a room at the very bottom of the dungeons of their castle (appropriately furnished and habitable, of course) with as many toys, games, playthings and little diversions as he could get his hands on, emphasising how important it was for Indigo to be a good little brother and always stay in his room, obeying his elder brother, caring for one another. This worked for about six centuries, Indigo perfectly content to stay in his room and play with the many wonderful things his family brought to him to keep him amused, as well as entertaining them when they visited him down below.
  
  When their father died and Indigo's brother came into power, though, he grew rather complacent and self-assured, convinced that his little brother would always do what he said no matter how he treated him, visiting him less and less. This in turn kept the staff and the rest of his family from visiting either, for nearly all of them were terrified of Indigo's power and would take any excuse not to come into contact with him now that the master of the household didn't seem to feel it was necessary. The imp grew bored, listless and a bit resentful, usually taking out his frustrations on the few who happened to venture into his room to bring him his food. The resulting injuries, transformations and other bizarre fates that befell them caused a great disruption in the Clardmond Estate's staff arrangements, servants having to be silenced from bribes to beheadings so that the 'dirty little secret' of the family wouldn't be made public to the rest of demonic society.
  
  His brother was soon the only one who could bring him his food and not risk any negative consequences for himself, though every time he did so and Indigo ran up to him hopefully, thinking they would play together, he would simply close the door in his face once the cart had been pushed in. Slowly the resentment towards this treatment began to outweigh the love and respect he still had for his brother, culminating one day in a rather joyful escape when a band of strong adventurers had broken into the Estate and unwittingly come across Indigo's locked room, believing it to be some sort of vault for treasures, spells, and arcane items galore. Learning from them rather quickly that yes, there was indeed a vast world outside of his room and his brother's Estate he was being kept from, Indigo repaid the adventurers with a bit more than they bargained for and made his way out without a single backward glance.
  
  From that point on, Indigo's power and appetite for life grew exponentially, embracing every new experience that befell him with a kind of manic glee. Anything and everything was sought to wipe away those increasingly bitter and dark memories of his family, those many centuries he spent feeling alone, rejected, and useless.
  
  

  Scenario B

  
  Indigo was (and will always be) born at the exact moment when the first conscious thought entered reality. Slow to develop at first, the more and more life that appeared, the more and more the imp developed, feeding off the intelligence, the ideas, the thoughts, the hopes, the fears, the very souls of all those that were coming into existence alongside him. As religion and art and science developed and evolved, so did the imp. Living through the mortal ages, taking influences from all of the greats and many of the unknowns as well, the little demon fed and expanded his power until he ascended past any conceivable limitation, continuing to exist even past the end of the universe he had been born in and the start of the next.
  
  After about thirteen universal cycles, the imp finally managed to literally see and do everything possible within that universe...and so he moved on to another one. Faced with a fresh new set of influences, cultures, experiences and souls to feed from, his appearance altered dramatically, as did his abilities, and he spent a fair number of Big Bangs and Big Crunches revelling in the novelty of the place.
  
  But, of course, as with all things, the novelty wore off. And so, rather than find a new universe, this time he decided to create his own, setting himself up as its God. Surprisingly, once he had created the universe, he grew rather bored with being its God within the first few millennia, and thus descended into it as a mortal. Many an epic tale was told about his exploits and adventures in his comparatively short lifespan, but alas, with the eventual destruction of the universe he'd created, the tales were destroyed along with his mortal remains.
  
  He sprang up again in an entirely separate universe created by ascended beings that had, originally, come from his own creation. Pleased at this happy coincidence, he sought them out, soon developing a rather close relationship with one of them, the two immortal, mind-defying beings spending most of their time finding new ways in which to show their love to one another. This generally resulted in the creation of several different universes between them, followed by brutal, premature destruction of them with little to no care for any of the individuals within them. Descending into greater and greater levels of boredom and apathy with correspondingly greater and greater levels of cruelty and evil towards everyone else, the loving pair of monsters were eventually brought down by the other ascended beings in a great blaze of mutually destructive power, thus ending the previously believed endless cycle of tragedy and death born out of their love.
  
  Whether the Indigo you see in front of you is a product of this universe alone or perhaps an amalgamation of all the previous ones remains to be seen...but one thing is certain. He is a being of immense, and ironically unimaginable power.
  
  

  Scenario C

  
  Indigo existed first as merely a set of ordinary playing cards owned by a struggling magician of mediocre talent. When the magician died, he was passed down to his son, who followed a rather hedonistic lifestyle, drinking, womanising and gambling. In a desperate bid to be allowed to continue in a game of poker, Indigo was offered as collateral for $20, playing up his sentimental value and potential supernatural powers, since he had come from a magician and the man's father. After the son lost the hand (and probably getting beaten or worse for not coming up with the money), Indigo then came into the possession of an egotistical loan shark, who rarely ever used him. Rather he displayed the deck of cards as a kind of prize and symbol of his own power, telling all sorts of fanciful tales about its origins, its previous owners and what he had done to them in order to obtain them. Sure enough, one of these tall tales came back to bite the loan shark, culminating in his murder and the theft of his trophy deck. Indigo passed through a number of hands then, the legends about him growing larger and larger, more and more souls fighting to possess him, to stamp him with their influence and ownership. Finally, recognising the danger of having such a tainted and sought after deck of cards around, an up and coming thief first stole and then ditched Indigo at the first opportunity, tossing him into an open manhole.
  
  Rather damaged and used and worn, Indigo was nevertheless found by the many vermin-like inhabitants of the sewers, found to be and plentiful and potentially useful material to hoard, and was taken away, tossed onto a pile of similar trinkets and junk. He stayed there to rot slightly until a couple of enterprising youths found the rat's treasure trove, taking many of the more salvageable items, Indigo being among them. Though he was too far gone to really be played with in any sort of professional game, the children didn't mind, not having much in the form of entertainment, and soon were happily using the cards in all sorts of made up games. Indigo spent much time being used in friendly circumstances, bringing happiness and enjoyment, connecting people together, rather than bitterness, betrayal and tearing them apart as he had before.
  
  Several generations later, when he was between owners, something rather extraordinary happened. Because of all the history he'd gone through, all the souls and hands that had passed over him, the many influences both human and animal, with all the emotions that came with each owner, Indigo suddenly became animate, developing the form seen today, much like a tsukumogami. He chose his first name from the color of the back of the deck he had been (Indigo), while his last name became a portmanteau of the four suits of his cards: Club, Heart, Spade, Diamond = Clardmond. Free to move about on his own volition now, the little imp bore no ill will towards any of his owners (especially considering most of them were dead), and instead devoted his newfound existence to exploring and enjoying life as much as he possibly could.
  
  Always up for a game and possessing a playful spirit, Indigo Clardmond is a demon that just wants to be your friend. And maybe nibble a bit on your soul. In a good way, of course.
  
  

  Scenario D

  
  Indigo was one of the first artificially constructed demons. That is to say, rather than being born from a damned soul going through the conversion process or the product of some occult ritual involving heavy ties to the mortal world and the need for a mortal womb in which to develop, Indigo was produced in Hell using the energy of unrefined, damaged, or fragmented souls. While in most artificial demons this tended to produce a rather unstable mental state and a constant feeling of incompletion, Indigo seemed perfectly content with the jumbled mess of incomplete souls and emotions that he'd inherited, seeing it as a fun challenge to overcome. With no specific mortal past or sins to weigh him down either, he threw himself into the reckless abandon and hedonism most imps normally succumb to for a few centuries at most...and pretty much stayed there.
  
  While other imps grew and developed into greater and lesser demons around him, he seemed perfectly content to remain in his small, vulnerable, yet energetic form. Some felt that as an artificial demon, he perhaps didn't have the capacity to develop beyond the impish stage, too fragile for any real power. Others felt his lack of the touch of the mortal realm rendered him unable to understand concepts such as maturing and growth, and thus his body reflected his mind. Both were soon proven wrong.
  
  One day Indigo had taken to carrying around a book. This was not an especially unusual sight, a couple of oddball imps did enjoy playing with books and sometimes even reading them, particularly if they contained magic they could learn to wield, but Indigo's book was different. It was unmarked, unregistered, and covered in a simple black hardcover, reasonably thick, but not to the point of weighing the imp down. No one was entirely sure where he got it or what was in it. When they asked, he'd be playfully evasive, either whispering of all sorts of closely guarded secrets that he'd promised not to reveal, or claim he couldn't say until he'd finished writing it, and that the book was impossible to open until then. This piqued the curiosity of some, but for the most part, it was written off as a silly game the imp was playing. Especially considering no one believed an imp, let alone an artificially constructed one, had the intelligence or patience to write anything.
  
  Then came the War of the Blue Flames, in which most regions of Hell at the time were swept up in, another story entirely. The point was that nearly all demons tried to get involved, from the greatest to the smallest, and Indigo was no exception. What made him the exception though, is that while most imps were casually brushed aside by the more serious and brutal and mature and experienced fighters, sent home with their tails between their legs and their pride absolutely shattered, Indigo almost gleefully held his own against any opponent that approached him. At first it was just rumor, easily written off as owing credit to stronger, more developed allies, or just a playful spat between him and another imp that was misconstrued as some sort of awe-inspiring battle. But then the stories grew more frequent and varied and detailed, with demons even coming forward and admitting he had beaten them.
  
  Wild theories began springing up all over. How was a single imp able to constantly and consistently defeat demons that should, in all aspects, be superior to him? His artificial nature was considered as perhaps giving him an unforeseen advantage or power over natural demons. Perhaps there was a particularly accomplished mortal summoner that was lending him power, and he'd entered a contract as a familiar? Some even went as far as to say one of the Seven great demonic Lords had taken a liking to him as a kind of pet or consort and had made him unbeatable by any normal demon.
  
  Then they remembered the book. He had still been carrying it around, even in battle. A demon he had defeated claimed he saw him opening and reading from it at one point while they'd been fighting. Almost instantly, opinion became unanimous. He was getting his power from that book. Either it was some sort of potent artifact or it was full of powerful spells and techniques that no other demon had ever seen before. Indigo didn't exactly quash the rumors either, refusing to let anyone see the book and being more evasive than ever about its contents or nature, always playfully smiling and giggling as he did so.
  
  The War ended, but demons were hooked. They had to possess that book, they had to learn of its secrets and develop such power for themselves. After all, if it could do so much for a simple imp, especially an artificially made one, just imagine what it could do for a full grown demon at the height of his or her power! Attempts were made on Indigo's life, which he seemed to take with the same playful humor as he did everything else. Then came the seduction attempts, which all backfired in horribly hilarious ways. Finally came the begging and pleading to Indigo, wanting him to share its power, its secrets.
  
  Indigo, revelling in the attention and absurdity of the situation, said he would offer the book to whoever could retrieve it from a specially designed gauntlet of traps, puzzles and challenges of both mental and physical nature. A twisting labyrinth of pure frustration and exhaustion. Many imps and demons attempted it and even more attempted ways to circumvent or cheat or bribe their way to it. Adventures and drama galore were born from the challenge, the legends and anticipation grew ever larger, with the book being hailed as the key to ruling all of creation.
  
  Finally, after it seemed no one would ever be able to reach the book, a young, desperate imp somehow managed to make it all the way to the end. Hailing him as a hero (and secretly plotting to take the book from him the moment he let his guard down) several demons eagerly crowded around him in celebration and attempts to get a glimpse of what lay inside the book. As it happened, the imp couldn't read anyway, only wanting to reach the book to impress his friends and gain a bit of recognition, being quite unremarkable otherwise. So he casually offered it to the many greedy demons around him, eager for a glimpse, asking them to read it for him.
  
  Which was when Indigo promptly dissolved into fits of hysterical laughter. For on the pages, written in an impressive script and very methodically detailed, were his favorite culinary recipes. No spells, not one drop of power or magic, just cooking recipes. He'd been experimenting with them at the time, and didn't want a silly little thing like a war to get in the way, so he'd brought it with him as he fought, able to multitask. His power was entirely his own and possession of the book was utterly pointless.
  
  The artificial imp was never quite forgiven for that little bit of trickery, the majority of Hell's denizens quite bitter about being duped and revealed to be so flawed, outsmarted by some unnatural creation, quite a lot vowing revenge. Some of the older, wiser demons secretly praised his ingenuity and enthusiasm in the face of such unfair circumstances, and the imp who'd successfully retrieved his book did manage to rise to power through its help in a way...by learning to read and securing a lucrative chef's position in Gluttony's realm.
  
  Indigo Clardmond appreciates effort and value in one's own accomplishments above all else. Should you be seeking a means of obtaining power or success that is not your own, be prepared to face humiliation and disappointment if the imp is involved.
