• Case of 1992

  You flick on the tape, and scratchy sound comes through. It begins to slowly clear up, and you begin to form words.
  
  SIMMONS: Detective Rob Simmons interviewing victim Gregory Elton Bailee, age 10. Date is July 28, 1992. Interview on basis of the suspicious disappearance of the victim and his brother, Alan John Bailee.
  SIMMONS: Now, Gregory, is it true that your brother is still missing from July 23?
  G. BAILEE: Uh, yeah.
  SIMMONS: Can you give me an account of what happened on that day?
  G. BAILEE: I... I don't really know. Uh, I mean... I don't, I don't remember. You already talked to me, I don't remember.
  SIMMONS: Yes, Gregory, but this interview is now for legitimacy of a possible homicide. Now, can you--
  G. BAILEE: Alan's not dead.
  SIMMONS: We don't know that for sure, Gregory, but we'll hope for the best. Can you tell me what happened that morning?
  G. BAILEE: I don't remember... I mean, I think Alan and I told Mom we were going to play up in the old field by our house--we did this all the time. It was an old farming field, they didn't use it anymore, but it used to be like a plantation or something. A few old log houses were still there and stuff, most of them in pretty bad shape. Alan and I would go in them sometimes, but they always looked ready to fall down, so, uh, we didn't do it a lot.
  G. BAILEE: There was a big forest by it too, we would get the kids and we'd go play hide and seek when we were younger, and War too. Uh, but, yeah, Alan and I went to go play in the field again. He... He told me he saw something weird in the wood, like a bunch of big bumps in the ground. He told me it was Indian treasure... Were there Indians in Massachusetts?
  SIMMONS: Yes, I do believe there were.
  G. BAILEE: So, uh, yeah, he said, "Let's go dig it up! We'll find treasure worth millions and we can sell it to the big museums." We thought we'd be on the headlines, you know, "Boy Wonders Find Lost Indian Treasure,' or something.
  G. BAILEE: So we took some trowels from Mom's shed and went out. I was really excited, I thought I'd find something cool, and i'd be rich. We found arrowheads down by the river all the time, but Mom said that we should just keep 'em. The old man up the street bought 'em sometimes, but, well, he only gave us a quarter or something. Mom didn't like that he bought 'em.
  SIMMONS: So did you find treasure in the woods, Gregory?
  G. BAILEE: Oh, uh, right... So, we went up into the woods, me and Alan, and he said that it was this way, and I followed him. We both knew the woods really well, we lived there, pretty much. But I'd never been this far in, and I don't think Alan had either. So I, uh, I asked him how he found it, and he just said, "Because."
  G. BAILEE: You don't just find something because you found it but I thought, whatever, at least he knows where it is. Anyways... We, uh, we went out pretty far, I think, but... I don't really, uh, really remember too much.
  SIMMONS: Did you ever make it to where Alan said the treasure was?
  G. BAILEE: I think... Maybe, we might have. I don't know. I just... I don't remember much. All i know is... Alan, he, uh, he was there for one second, and then, um, gone the... gone the next. Like smoke.
  SIMMONS: And where do you think Alan went?
  G. BAILEE: I don't know! All I remember is seeing him, and then--then he was gone! I remember laying in a bunch of pine, or something. My eyes hurt, I was covered in dirt, and I couldn't move. Like I'd broken something.
  SIMMONS: What time was it when you came to?
  G. BAILEE: I... I don't know. It was... It was pretty dark. So I guess like maybe eight? I don't know... All I remember was... Was a lot of pain, like, on my side, and my arm.
  SIMMONS: What happened to them, Gregory?
  G. BAILEE: I was sure... Sure my arm was, uh, broken, but I don't know what was wrong with my side. Like, I looked down and...
  
  There's a brief silence on the tape.
  
  SIMMONS: And what, Gregory?
  G. BAILEE: It hurt a lot. I think--no, I was bleeding. A lot. I got really scared, and, I, uh, I didn't know what happened. So I pulled my shirt up, and, it was really bloody, like Friday the 13th. But, it, uh... It looked like I had a square missing from me?
  SIMMONS: A square?
  G. BAILEE: Yeah, uh... It was a really, really big hole, but it was like a perfect square. Like a cookie cutter. I... I was scared. I think I started to call for Alan, but he... He, uh, didn't call back.
  SIMMONS: Is this around the time the authorities--police--found you?
  G. BAILEE: I think so... I don't... I don't remember much.
  SIMMONS: That's okay, Gregory. So the police found you, and took you to the hospital correct?
  G. BAILEE: Yeah...
  SIMMONS: Good. Now, I need to ask you again, do you remember anything between the time when you and Alan were looking for the treasure, and when you woke up?
  G. BAILEE: No! I don't! I just...
  
  A bit of crying can be heard.
  
  G. BAILEE: I just... I remember being in a hospital bed, and the doctors were looking at... At my clothes. They were... They were bad, sir. I think my shirt was grey, but it was... It was like, red and brown. I... I couldn't hear them, but they were talking, and, I... They didn't say it was mine.
  SIMMONS: What wasn't yours, Gregory?
  G. BAILEE: The blood. I... I don't know, but only some was... I just... Where's Alan?
  SIMMONS: We don't know. We're trying to find that out from you, Gregory.
  G. BAILEE: I need... I need Alan. I... No, I need Alan. I need to find him.
  
  Chairs can be heard shuffling, and the voices seem to be a little more distant.
  
  SIMMONS: Where are you going, Gregory?
  G. BAILEE: Where's Alan? I need Alan. Alan! Please... Please, please, please...
  SIMMONS: Gregory, I'm going to have to ask you to--
  G. BAILEE: I need Alan! He's out there, I know he is! Please... Please...
  
  Crying can be heard. The victim seems to be saying his brothers name over and over again.
  
  SIMMONS: This is Detective Rob Simmons. The interview is closed. Now, for God's sake, get this kid out of here and to the hospital.
