    Merlton is captain of the guard in the town of Ormrfell. While the village is more or less peaceful, it is host to a wide variety of stories and rumors, all centering around Castle Grímnismál which overlooks it. Tradition has long maintained that its reclusive owner, Lord Fraenir, now takes the form of a dragon, a symbol of his corruption and greed. Merlton, being one of the only humans willing to interact with the demon lord, can say that this part of the legend is at least partially true.

    Because of the collective fear of the townspeople, Lord Fraenir has long stayed uninvolved in the running of his township, and it has fallen on the guardsmen to pick up the slack. Merlton has taken over from his predecessor in managing the day to day operations of the city, though he does this with relatively little help from his fellow guardsman. His men are all volunteers, untrained, and look at the position as an excuse to don armor for a few hours a week, rather than to protect the village in any real capacity. As a result, Merlton views his job as more duty than honor, and quietly longs for a position of real reputation and authority.

    Currently, he spends his days keeping an uneasy peace between Lord Fraenir and the people of Ormrfell. In his free time, he often finds excuses to visit with the Lord's ward and lover, Rua, who he currently considers one of his only friends.
