• Backstory

  Nephi was born to a human mother and a tiefling father. His mother died during childbirth and he was raised by his father, a former highwayman who fell in love and settled down. He taught Nephi all he knew about swordsmanship, and they would occasionally go out on treasure-hunting excursions as a father-son adventuring duo, although they never saw much action beyond some goblins or the occasional competition. On one of these particularly exciting trips out to a tomb or dungeon or whatever, Nephi's father failed to detect a pit fall and done got himself impaled on some spikes.
  
  After this, Nephi decided that adventuring probably wasn't his cup of tea and he had to figure out what to do aside from drink to ward off the oncoming PTSD. He briefly considered joining a militia, but past experiences with any of the other races put a pin in that idea right quick. He remembered an uncle, his mother's brother, who owned a business in a port city, and made his way there. His uncle very reluctantly hired on his nephew as a shipwright and sail-maker, and made sure to consistently remind his only remaining kin that this was a huge and inconvenient favor. After several years, Nephi's uncle fell ill, and the tiefling was able to take over the finances and bookkeeping. He worked very hard to get the business recognized under the Shipbuilder's guild and to gain any wealth and respect among the other entrepreneurs to quell the prejudices he inevitably faced. His uncle was unable to do much aside from hold pure and utter contempt for his weird red-skinned nephew. (He even made a little voodoo doll of him, which Nephi eventually discovered and kept as an amusing trinket.)
  
  BUT. EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN THE FIRE NATION ATTACKED. The Cult of the Dragon raided Nephi's town and business, stealing or burning nearly all of his possessions, including the business's dry-docked ships worth tens of thousands of gold pieces. Nephi packed up his swords and armor and headed towards Greenest, swearing to kill every last one of those fuckers should he meet them.

  "Why're you so obsessed with money anyway?"
  
  The tiefling taps clawed fingers on the wooden desk as he considers the question. Black eyes dart up to his companion and he curls his lip.
  
  Well, darling," he begins matter-of-factly. "money is respect, and I intend to gain a lot of it."
  
  "Funny," the half-orc teases, crossing her arms with a smirk. "never met a rich man I respected."
  
  Nephi opens his mouth to retort but finds himself unable. He returns to counting coins, smiling to himself. She had a point.
