• Background

  Alethor grew up in a small river town called Crossford, a village home to peaceful and friendly denizens, which earned its namesake for the shallow ford of the Sapphire Stream river it was founded at. Most of the townsfolk were fisherman and the town lived almost solely off of the river thanks to its easy source of food and fresh water. They became prosperous by trading these goods with a town located farther inland named Longdale. Alethor's father, Aromir, was captain of the Town Guard and had high hopes for young Alethor. He believed his son should take up a sword and a shield to join the Guard and one day lead it himself rather than become a fisherman like his father before him. Alethor trained at swordplay throughout his teenage years but never saw it as his future. After training every morning, he would immerse himself in the dusty old tomes of the town library or let his mind wander to the stories his mother used to tell him to help him fall asleep; tales of wizards and sorcerers slaying evil monsters and villains to save captured princesses. Reading centuries-old spells on crumpled and faded pages was one of the things he loved best. Before her passing, he confided in his mother that he didn't want to live out his days standing at a post outside doorways or patrolling the town as a guardsman. That was not his destiny. He wanted to travel the world and see for himself if goblins and dragons truly existed in a magical world that was out there waiting for him. Most of all, he wanted to learn to use magic. He couldn't bring himself tell his father that he would rather leave his home forever to see if he could learn to control time or master the elements or warp the very fabric of space itself. No matter what he thought his purpose in life was, he owed it to his father to be the man Aromir wanted him to be. He'd raised him alone for years after his mother had passed, and Alethor was not going to throw that away for the impossible chance of becoming a sorcerer right out of a fairy tale. Only days after he'd finally accepted his future as a member of the Town Guard, Crossford was attacked. It was as if the very river that had sustained them for so long was now trying to rid itself of their presence. A colossal watery elemental rose from its waters and assaulted the town. The Town Guard rushed to meet it but their swords were useless against water itself. Alethor remembered a spell he'd once read that could dissipate an elemental's physical form, and he ran to the battle and yelled it out before the monster. The elemental roared a horrible sound and writhed and twisted but ultimately it did not disappear. Enraged that a mortal would attempt to destroy him, he surged over the town and destroyed every building, slaughtering everyone but Alethor who he left alive to witness it all. Alethor ran to his dying father, whose last words were only for him to run. Alethor stood and turned to see there was no hope for that as the elemental barred the way. He mocked and taunted Alethor, saying it was his fault they'd died because he wasn't powerful enough for the spell to have destroyed him. Fueled by his grief and anger, Alethor yelled out the spell again. The elemental knew what was happening and when he heard the first word, he formed into a massive wave and crashed down onto Alethor as the spell finished. That was the last he remembered before waking up in the infirmary in Longdale. The healer told him they'd heard no word from Crossford in days and sent men to find out why. They found him lying drenched and unconscious among the ruins and carried him back with them. While Alethor explained to him what had happened at Crossford he could tell the healer was wary of him. He explained to Alethor that while the spell had worked, the spirit that was possessing and controlling the water had attempted to posses Alethor in an act of desperation. Some fragmented piece of the spirit had spliced before the spell had banished it. He motioned Alethor to the water basin and he saw for himself that his skin had become an icy pale and his hair and eyes a deep blue. He angrily splashed his reflection in the water, not wanting to look on a stranger he knew to be himself. Or he would have, had the water not moved out of the way of his hand. The healer bobbed his head as if to confirm some suspicion. Alethor had retained part of the being he hated most in the world, and with it, some of its powers. In Crossford he had used one of the spells he'd read so much about and he could now control an element. It seemed as if the gods had cruelly granted him his childish wish after all. With no home to return to, he set out to find answers; answers as for who or what it was that destroyed his town and murdered his father, answers for how he could find it and get his vengeance, and answers for what he had become.
