• Biography

  Loch was born with the Dalish in the Free Marches. His mother was an escaped circle mage, half-human, and his father a hunter. The fact he wasn’t completely elven (and it was obvious in how his appearance: too tall, smaller ears, crooked, odd nose. Even his name, given to him by his mother) made him an outcast among his peers.
  
  But he didn’t mind, because he was more interested in spending time with his parents than any of the rest of the clan. He loved his mother, and he easily picked up on how she was treated… oddly, by the clan. He modelled himself after her and in doing so, distanced himself.
  
  But when he was around ten, the clan was hit with a terrible winter, and then a wave of illness. Half the clan was decimated, including both of his parents. Loch did not take it well, and snapped at almost anyone for no good reason. He was a smart child and had a talent for picking out people’s weaknesses and sore spots. He was always angry; he didn’t see a reason not to make everyone else hurt as much as he did.
  
  He lived then with his father’s father. His grandfather was strict and disdainful and had never liked his son’s wife, or their all-too-human looking son. He was never abusive, but Loch had always been desperate for approval, from any relatives. He never got it, despite how he forced himself to change, dropped the anger and pretended to like books, stopped harassing the other kids and became everything he thought his grandfather wanted.
  
  None of that worked, so he tried being haughty, pretentious. Nothing. Neither did quiet, soft-spoken, respectful. Being sweet and caring didn’t make any change either. But when he was acting kind, the woman who took care of the halla spent time with him, and the halla were amazing. So he kept up pretending to be nice, because niceness was awarded with taking care of the halla. So he made his first friends, the old elf lady and the herd of halla.
  
  His magic developed when he was 14. Their old Keeper’s First had died in the bout of illness those years before and no one else had shown any talent for it, so Loch became the First with barely any protest. The keeper was kind (even if she did make him sit and read boring old elven history) so he was kind in return. The idea that his fake kindness could be considered untruthful never crossed his mind.
  
  His teenage years were a blur of study and battle. He loved the thrill of a fight, the way his blood rushed and the way he could let go and stop acting and pretending; the triumph he felt when it was all done and he was still alive. He was really much better suited to be a reaver, a warrior, than a mage. He often snuck away from camp with the hunters who were on bandit patrol, just in case he would have the chance to fight.
  
  But even though he was mostly settled in the clan when he was an adult, he never quite fit in. There were always some that avoided him, gossip that went around. Whenever it got particularly bad, the Keeper often sent him into villages to fetch things or to “spy” on the humans. He fit in rather well, if he let his hair cover his ears and stood up straight; too tall to be seen as an elf at first glance.
  
  It was why he was the one sent the the Conclave. The clan didn’t care much for politics, but an excuse to get Loch away of the clan was always a taken opportunity.
