• Beginnings

  23,000 miles from the planet Carona, amidst the deep eerie blackness she flew on. TR83, a small battle ship, carrying 150 some odd passengers and around 500 loyal army men, had only one destination. Get to the planet Adrina with everyone on board alive and safe. There was a war raging, down on the planets and in the skies; a world war. The first this galaxy had ever experienced. Seven planets against five, and although you wouldn’t expect it, the five had the upper hand. Mostly because two of the five had army bases, and had access to men, drones, space crafts, guns, unlimited ammunition, landcrafts, and more. Much more.
  TR83 was from Carona, one of the seven planets, a resource for lavish food, silks, jewelry, and precious metals. But it also had a very small factory responsible for creating a limited number of spacecrafts. TR83 and her Captain were on their way to Adrina mostly to send new fresh men, just old enough to join the army, from their rich home planet out into the stars to fight a seemingly endless battle. Among the passengers were a few senators, generals, and corporals from different places, but the most guarded and some thought of as the most important person on board, was the Caronian princess. No one knew why she was on board, except, of course, the Captain, and the army men would whisper about it late into the night. It was obvious that many of the men fancied her, and, who could help it? It is true that all of the Caronian people were beautiful, with their pale green skin and dark brown eyes. But the Princess was different. Her sparkling blue eyes proved it, and her rich wavy flowing locks of black hair complemented her small round face. There was an ancient poem her people had found when her planet was still young, and it told of the blue eyed girl to be born when the world was about to end. Most people disregarded this poem, calling the Caronians and other people from different planets who thought of the poem as truth, silly and superstitious. The Princess herself was unsure. She couldn’t see how someone like her could be responsible for the saving of the whole galaxy.
  The only scuffle of activity on the ship was in the cabins, eating halls, and work-out rooms, where the men were told to rest, eat and get extra fit so that they would be healthy and ready for battle. A few of the men who had never left their own planet before had ‘flying fever’, which consists of a stomach ache and a sick, nauseous feeling sitting right behind the tongue. Those who had it sat around in their cabins holding their bellies and fighting back the urge to be sick, while their friends ate lavish food and cracked jokes about them behind their backs. It seemed that the only peaceful room in the whole place was the Captain’s courters and the Princess’s cabin.
  The Princess was lying on her bed twirling her hair and listening to the distant mumble of voices chattering from outside her hallway. She sighed as she pulled herself up and slid off the bed, then walked to the small round window and swept aside the silky white drapes. Her sparkling blue eyes darted about, taking every detail of the view from her large fancy cabin, which was situated towards the very back of the ship. She had been informed over the System that they were passing the Planet Tamine, which was well known for their beautiful landscaping, and the large geysers that spurted up out of the mountains. The peaceful people of the Planet would build their large exquisite landscapes and houses around these geysers, which were known to shoot their spray of steaming water well over 125 armes into the air. The greatest one on the Planet was called the Gueeser-Soimee, which meant in the Taminain language ‘majestic waters’, and was directly in the middle of the most striking garden on the Planet. It was so large that if you were in the right place at the right time, you could see it foaming all the way from space.
  Craning her neck to get a better look, the Princess feasted her eyes on the bright greens, deep reds and swirling blues of Tamine. But, with a bit of disappointment, she knew by her lessons of this Planet that the Gueeser-Soimee was farther to the north then what she was looking at now. She watched as it slowly shriveled into a small, round speck, and then was engulfed in the deep darkness of the never-ending black. She saw a distant star wink at her before she let the drapes fall back in its place between her and the window. She had never been outside her own Planet, although her Father made frequent trips to the outside worlds, especially since this never-ending war.
  She walked towards a mirror that was up against the right wall, and sat down in the red velvet chair. She lightly placed her hands, balled in tight fists, on the small table and then looked up at her face. She noticed her lip was quivering again. It had been doing that a lot lately; quivering, and she never knew that it was until she saw her own face reflected back. She felt that a few of her nerves had snapped. Her Father was off trying to win a battle with only a few hundred men against at least a thousand. He had sent a small message through the deep space between the planets, saying that they had deciphered another covert enemy message and that he needed more men in order to have a chance of winning. Also that his only child, the Caronian Princess, was to come and help. What was he talking about? He was always nervous that something would happen to her, even in the warm, sunny Palace back on Carona, and he would appoint at least five guards at a time to make sure she stayed safe. Even now, she thought, her lip quivering again, four were standing outside the door. They should make her feel safe, but they didn’t. If anything they made her feel even more uncomfortable.
  She glanced back at her face. The white swirling tattoos danced around her cheeks and eyes, making her always look happy and gentle. Every Caronian was born with them, and her people believed that they told the personality of the person. But she did not feel happy now. She really didn’t feel anything at all; except cold. She felt it sneaking inside her heart, and she shivered. A loud laugh rang sharply from the eating room, somewhere behind her, and she almost jumped out of her chair. She trembled again and got up, deciding that she would go out of her room and be social. She liked to be alone, and she usually was back home, but not here. It was too cold, nothing like her warm room that was always bright and cheery.
  She hurriedly fixed her hair in the tight bun and long braids that were traditional for royalties back on Carona, then silently tip-toed out the door. The guards gave the Caronian salute and then followed her, two in front, and two behind.
  “Not today,” she said, waving at the ones in front of her. “I don’t need anyone in front of me right now. If you must stay by me, please stay behind me.”
  Without a single word they stopped, and continued walking once the other guards were in front of them. The Princess sighed. She hated being followed everywhere she went; it was more like she was some kind of criminal then a princess.
  She did not feel very comfortable at all around the army men, so she generally tried to stay away from the eating halls and the work out rooms. But she knew where she was going; to visit the Captain.
  
  Hunnter always sat alone. He was naturally a quiet person, and preferred silence to any kind of noise. But on the ship, he couldn’t sit alone unless he was here, in his room. And he could never escape the noise. Even in his cabin, lying on his cot trying to think, there was always the distant rumble of voices. But he had gotten used to it, or, at least as used to it as he would ever be on this voyage.
  He was sitting on his bed with his back leaned up against the wall, eyes closed, thinking. He was thinking about the war that he was about to take part in, and Keirah, and if he would ever talk to her again. He hated a lot of noise, and was not looking forward to the battle looming up ahead closely in his future; all the guns, bombs, and fighter crafts shooting and blowing up everywhere. Let alone the men blowing up everywhere. He was feeling a little bit of flying fever; from the long flight or the fear of what was to come; he had no idea.
  And what about Keirah? If he died during battle, which was very probable, he would never see her again. Then he thought of the first time he saw her.
  He was the son of her father’s most trusted guard, Huorl, who was even now by the King’s side during the battle. Hunnter had played in the courtyards of the Palace, and would even see the young Princess from time to time running about the halls, dragging her Nanny along behind. One evening, when he was seven, he had ventured inside the Palace through a back door that had been left open, forgotten, by the cleaning droid. Default, maybe, in the droid, but all the same it was open and horribly tempting. Creeping quietly, on the tips of his toes so he would make as little noise as possible, he stepped inside the massive hallway. It was a small side door, opening into the long hallway that lead towards a series of rooms, of which he wasn’t really sure. He was trembling all over as he tiptoed through the Palace, glancing every which way whenever he heard the slightest sound. For his age, he was quite a bright boy and could tell what different little sounds meant even if they were so faint that any other Caronian might not even hear them.
  Suddenly he heard footsteps, tiptoeing like he was. And, a voice; small, from a very young child.
  “I see you!” Keirah called.
  Hunnter turned around, saw the little Princess, and dashed for a pillar that held a huge beam of stone stable above his head.
  “I can see your toe,” she said, slyly, and crept up to him. “BOO!” she shouted.
  The boy jumped, half out of his skin, and began trembling even more then before. “P-please don’t tell,” he said, “I didn’t mean any harm.” He slowly stepped from behind the pillar, and gasped out loud in astonishment.
  Blue!
  Her eyes were blue! Blue like the sky on a sunny day in spring, and like the sparkling lake right outside the Palace walls; a light blue, instead of the deep brown he had seen so often, even in his own face reflected back in the mirror at home.
  He wanted to say something about it, but he dared not; for she might see it as rude. Anyway, all he could manage was, “Are you the Princess?”
  “Yes,” the little girl giggled. She couldn’t be more then five years old. Her little pink dress, though, all bedecked with ribbons and lace, told Hunnter who she was long before she admitted it. “And who are you?” she asked innocently enough. “I have seen you playing with Joolke out in the garden many times.”
  He laughed his quiet little laugh; for he always spoke quietly. “That is your little pet, the funny cat looking creature? Yes, I play with him. He seems to be a nice pet.” He had been looking at her chin this whole time, trying to focus on something other then her strangely beautiful blue eyes. It was a small chin, with delicate curves and soft skin. At least her skin color is normal, he thought to himself. A soft, glowing healthy green. Light green, like new grass, he pondered further. Then he thought of his mother’s chin. It was nice; although a little bit rough, for she had scraped it when she was a young thing and it had never grown back as soft as chins should be.
  “Joolke is not funny looking,” said the Princess, jerking him away from his deep thoughts of chins. “My own Father brought him from the woods, when he went hunting. He thought of me, and so brought him home. Of course, he kept him in his study until he grew a bit less wild; enough for me to handle him. I say, what are you thinking about?”
  “Chins…” he said, dreamily.
  Just then the cleaning droid, buzzing around the walls collecting the dust that had fallen since yesterday at that exact time, saw them, and shouted in its monotonous voice, “Children, you should be playing outside. The Master says it is too stuffy in here for you, Princess.”
  “Oh Sarrie!” cried the Princess. “Your voice again! It has gone all mono-ton-ous.” She stumbled over the last word, with a perplexed look on her face. She saw that Hunnter noticed, and said hurriedly, “I just learned it this morning!”
  Slowly, his eyes opened. He looked around, surprised at first, and then in realization he opened them all the way. Sometimes his thoughts drifted him in some kind of sleep, where it almost became more real then what was going on around him. What had changed that happy little girl? Always laughing, always talking. Now she seemed sad and strangely quiet. She would probably say that she had finely grown up, but he hadn’t talked to her in years, ever since her Father went away. Since then she had kept to herself and had shut him out. He really had no reason to even think about her; she had been rude and, he thought, a bit snotty. He knew that he was lucky to ever have talked to her, but all the same, he thought they were becoming good friends.
  But that was a long time ago, and he had almost given up on ever talking to her again especially when he was sent to the battle. That seemed to be all he could think about nowadays, that he was being sent to his death, to fight a war that no one really knew how it even started, and even fewer truly knew what it was about. And then those who did couldn’t agree on it.
  And what about Keirah? Did she know, for her father certainly knew? All Hunnter was aware of was that the Planets disagreed on something, and that they were already on edge because of the rising prices on food and other goods like clothing and such.
  A few of the Leaders from different Planets suggested destroying the enemy’s military Planet, Corim, but no one could do that. Because if one Planet were destroyed, gone, forever, then that galaxy would have an empty whole to be filled. All of the other Planets would start to spin off course, and then that whole galaxy would be doomed and then the other galaxies…It would be a mess that no one could fix.
  Hunnter was extremely exhausted about thinking of the war and the economic problems. There were too many, and more and more just seemed to pile on top of the mess.
  He had admitted to himself quite a while back that he had the smallest of crushes on Keirah, but everyone did and everyone knew it. And he wasn’t any more special then anyone else and he was a fool to think like that. But it still hurt, worse than anything, when she turned away from him. He thought that she might have returned his feelings, until that happened.
  Letting out a long sigh, he drifted into sleep.
