• Description

  Imagine what it would be like to have your entire life -- your friends, your family, your interests, your loves, your hatreds, your future -- all taken away from you in a single instant. Imagine a hard, lumpy bed, a noise-filled ward, the sharp sting of needles entering your flesh at all hours of the day, the indignity of being woken up just as you are about to fall asleep for incessant vital statistics measurements, the doctors whose names you don't know (but that's okay, because they don't remember your name, either; they just remember you as "the non-small cell lung carcinoma in room 6"), and your own name, your very own name, that you have just about forgotten.
  
  Then you might have some clue as to what it is like to be dying in a hospital.
  
  
  
  Natsumi is dying.
  
  No one can help her.
  
  She lives on the 7F, otherwise known as the hospice, of the hospital just a few minutes away from her home. She and other patients that reside on the top floor of the hospital are essentially on death row. While some prepare themselves for their inevitable doom, others scramble to try and get fulfilling accomplishments completed beforehand; for example, "ten things I want to before I die" lists and the like. There is no hope for these patients, aside from the staff and helpers to make their numbered days as comfortable as possible.
  
  Natsumi is not yet bound to her bed and on her last leg in the losing race of life. If her condition stabilizes, she is released to go back home. She frequently visits the hospital down the street of her home for check-ups. If her condition worsens even slightly, she is returned back to the hospice.
  As other hospice patients have realised, there is no fourth time in being released from this place. Once you come back after your third release, your condition will most certainly decline so much so that a fourth time is unacceptable.
  
  "I can't wish for anything if I already know that it won't come true. I can't hope, or pray, because I know that God, if he is truly real, won't pay attention to the likes of me. He hasn't my entire life, why should he start now? The ones that used to visit me every chance they could when I first came to this place no longer seem to think I exist. My friends and even my family became acquaintances and eventually strangers. I think they just didn't want to look into the face of another victim of death's embrace. It scared them, so they shut me out of their thoughts and memories to make it less painful for them to deal with it. All I can do now... is give up."
