• Biography

  The long version: He is, in simple terms, the consciousness of all the magic from his planet gathered into a moon-sized spacial body. On its own, this huge, glimmering orb in the sky that accompanies the moon and sun in Lurran’s orbit (Lurran being his home planet) is called the Glass Moon. When he desires it, Dean can artificially construct bodies, or avatars, of himself on Lurran’s surface, in which he looks like how I draw him almost all the time. The only difference between his avatar and most humans is that when he dies, his soul simply returns to the Glass Moon- or at least the chunk of soul he put into the body, he is always in control of said moon regardless.
  
  He was first born as a mortal human being, back when magic was simply another spread-around aspect of the world, much like air. Magic took all physical forms (gas, plasma, liquid, and solids) but could be channeled into spells that would temporarily consume some of that magic. He wasn’t good at it, with ice spells being the only thing he could cast and keep stable, but somehow his discovery of being able to store magic in objects such as gems, belts, or other focuses (foci?) was what got him through to graduation. Mind you, many, many mages have tried that before, but somehow he was the first to actually succeed in recorded history, and to do so in a way that was very distinct from enchanting items, which would burn off their reserves by casting spells until there was nothing left.
  
  The key element here is that how he discovered it wasn’t because of a botched enchantment, or because he nearly blew up a tower with experimentation, or anything quite like that, but he found that magic in its raw form had minimal side-effects on himself and he explored that. Raw magic can be extremely dangerous, and has an almost radioactive effect when left to its own devices, but what kind of radiation effects one receives is entirely unpredictable due to the infinite capabilities magic has. When being in the presence of not just gaseous magic, nor plasmic, nor liquid, but solid, crystallized magic –the most potent known concentration- did almost nothing to him after prolonged exposure, he discovered that it was because his body was absorbing and negating it.
  
  
  In other words, he essentially was storing it away for later. It backfired a lot because now he had no control over how much magic went into his spells so long as he had the magic in his system, but once he got control of it, he researched how to manipulate objects to negate magic while still enabling them to absorb it, and thereby rendering it usable in a significantly safer state than having heavily-enchanted staves and accessories holding micro-crystals does. So they slapped a diploma in his hand, signed him up for a job in The Big City and sent him on his way.
  
  Long story short, it wasn’t long before folks discovered the essential detail to how he figured this out and continued to do so, and word spread like wildfire that he had a particularly interesting way of interacting with magic overall. This information got into questionable hands, and one day some folks in rather fancy robes approached Dean with some questions about what they referred to as, “First Era Vessel Casting.” The poor guy didn’t really know what they were talking about because he assumed he was the only one and some kind of outlier when it came to radioactivity, and they essentially convinced him to visit one of their work locations to explain in depth- and in private.
  
  The group called themselves Crystal Comet, and their focus was researching the magic of a long-lost era in which mages like Dean were commonplace, able to store and cast incredible amounts of magic with glorious –and devastating- effects. However, their records show that things weren’t going well at the end of their era, and some kind of cataclysmic event occurred that destroyed nearly everything in the region. The closer to what they speculate to have been the epicenter, the less information they find, but all geological evidence suggests it happened at the capital city.

  Anyway, to shorten this a bit, they convince Dean that he has the key to restoring this now-practically-extinct trait and possibly be able to grant it to others, and essentially swindle him into furthering his research on the extent of how much magic can safely be absorbed and what kind of spells can be cast with it all. When full of magic, Dean’s appearance does change (glowing, minor mutations of the skin, a ‘fuller’ build, reduced gravity on himself, etc) but his personality is mostly intact.
  
  It’s only after a long time of doing this and increasing his personal capacity that he learns that these cultists don’t just seek to revive Vessel Casting through themselves, but think it’s far more likely to occur by wiping out everyone else- aka induce another cataclysm/apocalypse.
  
  Dean’s horrified by this, but by the time he puts two and two together, the Crystal Comets have essentially gotten him just past the point of no return, and their intentions –and influence- have spread to an infamous level with him as the now-unwilling face of this impending mass-genocide. Desperate to find a way to get out of this, the mage realizes as he ponders his dwindling options that he’s not going to get out of this alive, and is either going to be killed by the cult for his betrayal, or by the public for his horrid reputation- and hiding is not an option.
  
  So he does the only thing he can do: takes as much magic as he possibly can from the planet (and then some), and just… leaves.
  
  Or tries, anyway. Having all of Lurran’s magic in himself mutates and transforms him on his way off the planet, and he just barely passes orbiting distance before he loses all grip on that magic and it explodes outward, crystallizing around him layer by layer until he’s so densely buried under magic that his body serves as the innermost core of this raw, magic moon. It devastates the environment, the people, and the natural balance overall, but hey, only a few cultists died during his escape, that’s better than everyone.
  
  Nobody hears anything for over 100 years, this new glassy moon orbiting alongside the original but conveniently always missing it. Any side of the planet facing it gets just enough magic radiation to cast a few moderate spells at best, while furthest faces get almost none at all. One day, the two moons are about to collide when the Glass Moon just up and vanishes- and reappears on the other side of Lurran; it teleported itself. In the span of three years, it shows increasing signs of sentience, and speculation about whether or not it’s alive circulates until one day, a man with a very familiar face and a vague sensation of uncanny valley in his overall appearance shows up in the capital before the old, dilapidated mage’s college, declaring that he’s going to make things right again and atone for his horrible, terrible mistakes.
