  Peculiarity: “The Child of Light”
  
  • Explanation: Born with the ability to manipulate light; Shirley’s peculiarity stems from within herself. She can- for a lack of better words; glow. (Think Rapunzel from Tangled.) Albeit only when she is particularly feeling since her light is connected to her emotions. Therefore; the stronger the emotion; the brighter her shine. Yet; her glow is a minor factor in her everyday life; thanks to Miss Peregrine’s help with excreting control, but when driven with enough raw emotion; her light can gleam in a blinding intensity that can leave a person seeing spots and disoriented for several minutes after seeing its flash.

  Character History: Upon her birth; it was fairly clear that she was extraordinary- for upon her first breath; Shirley seemed to sport a golden glow. Albeit one dim enough that the doctors blamed its existence on faulty lighting and the trick of the ol’ eyes. This, however, was proven false as she grew older- for her shine only brightened as she aged. The reasoning, or cause of her ability was left unknown, but it was a marvel indeed and her parents saw the power as astonishing. Together; the three of them would make use of Shirley’s glow and find entertainment in making the walls dance with shadow puppets made from her light. Much unlike other odd children who were not disowned by their family; Shirley was kept hidden from the outside world for fear of what they would do to her. She was oblivious of the world around her and as a natural instinct- was drawn to it out of curiosity. It was her own curiosity that caused her life to be turned upside down as one night she escaped from her comfortable capacity, and went to enjoy a nearby festival. The brightness of the festival helped keep her glowing a secret; at least to a minimum amount, and the rest was covered by a cloak that she had dawned. Throughout the wee hours; she enjoyed herself- dancing, eating, celebrating. It was all exciting until a fellow festival goer accidentally stepped upon her cloak and ripped from her body. Now, completely exposed to the average folk; the public was in awe at her shine and began to believe that she was one of the performers form the traveling circus that was featured at the festival. From reveling in their praise; Shirley proceeded to play the part as she agreed to their claims and broadcasted her ability. It was until later that she realized her mistake as she was approached by the ringmaster of the traveling circus who was fuming from having his publicity stolen by a lying brat. He snatched her away from the public eye and proceeded to frighten her by raising his voice, shaking her violently, and demanding answers from her. All of which caused Shirley's glow to intensify as she steadily grew more afraid. It didn't take too much longer before the girl had reached her limit as a steady scream escaped her mouth and a flash of light filled the room. Then, for a moment; there was silence, but it didn't last too long before the ringmaster began to shake in fear. “My eyes! My eyes!” He panicked as he blindly reached out for Shirley, but she was already making haste back to her house. When she arrived she was shaken to the bone and her glow was flickering with fear. Eventually she was able to come down with the help of her parents, but come by dawn break the next morning; world had already began to travel of what had happened at the festival. Apparently, her blast of light had blinded the aggressive ringmaster and he was demanding justice at whatever the cost. The Lewis family was frightened and in a panic; it wouldn't be too long before Shirley would be identified and the police would be looking for her- and who knows what they would do to her. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were in the middle of packing up the most immediate of the valuables when there was a knock at their door; both were frightened that they had already figured out Shirley’ location when they answered it, but instead they found someone much better- a friend. It was a stroke of luck that Miss Peregrine had been passing through at the time of the festival and had come to hear all of the commotion. That night she had followed Shirley home, but waited until the morning to announce her presence. Miss Peregrine offered a solution to the Lewis’s current problem and explained that it was not only the right choice for Shirley, but the safest; she proposed that the girl come to a home of hers; a sanctuary for children just like Shirley- for those who were most peculiar. It took much debate, but eventually the family decided that it was best for Shirley to leave, and with heavy hearts; they watched their only daughter be taken away to a place where she'd be safe, but also a place that they could not follow; Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children.

  • Due to her peculiarity; she finds reflective surfaces to be annoying for wherever she looks into one- there's a large chance that she's going to have her own light reflected back into her eyes.
  
  • Since she has a fascination with the constellations; Shirley has taught herself how to navigate using the stars- a skill that she didn't find useful until after her home was attacked by the hollow.
  
  • While she isn't too keen on public displays of affection- she finds them to be kinda embarrassing. Small tokens of affection such as hand holding, cheek kisses, and small smiles are among the few things that she treasures.
