Intro

• The Hands and the Mind

  Therese is an engineer, a practical theorist, an indefatigable arguer and a frustrated introvert. She walks many lines in her life: between her career and her calling, between loving her family and the bounds their expectations put on her, between being stimulated by other clever minds and frustrated by the social demands of other people. She feels perennially pulled between two worlds -- sometimes literally.
  
  Slight and wiry with long-fingered hands and slim limbs, Therese long ago gave up trying to become visibly muscular, which she used to dream would offset her petite figure before she discovered she doesn't build or keep muscle mass easily at all. She keeps her hair short, though now and then she'll forget to get a trim and end up with a lion's mane of curly waves after a few months. Her eyes are bright and her nose is a sharp swoop. She dresses plainly, for she would argue that in her line of work she often ends up oily and greasy, but she keeps this habit up even well outside of work. She does not exactly resent her body, but it's never quite given the outward impression she wished it would.
  
  For all that, though, she's defensive of her aesthetic and sartorial choices, no less so than a fashionista would be. They are choices, after all, and there are many ways to be beautiful.
