Backstory
Juliette Melinda Grey was born to a seemingly fairly average middle class family in terms of neighborhood, schooling, and even friends. Her mother Taralyn of Chinese descent, and her father Richard Grey of Dutch descent, living in a middle class neighborhood in the thick of Harper Woods, Michigan. She was raised to be independent, honest, use her intelligence to the best of her abilities, hard working, and kind hearted - however, Jules struggles with her mother being very manipulative. Taralyn wanted constant say in what Jules was doing, whether it was her first job, her friends, what movies she saw, where she went on dates, what she wore, what length her hair was, and even what college she went to. Tara was very impatient, meddling, and emotionally abusive - but Richard, was Juliette's saving grace.
Despite the fact that she did, and still...debatably does, love her mother, her father was the one who made sure she remained kind, and independent throughout Taralyns say so. He supported her every move, even when she was going against her mothers wishes, and only wanted happiness, and success for his daughter, the former most important to him. When she came out as bisexual, her mother was quite unhappy, but her father gave her the biggest hug he had ever given her in her entire seventeen years of life.
When she chose her college, despite it being several states away, like her mother didn't want, her father drove her all the way there, helped her unpack, hugged her like he couldn't possibly ever let go, let her cry on his shoulder, and even ordered her a pizza every single 7th day of every single month she was gone, the entire six years she was in college, and even made sure if she was visiting on the 7th, that they ate pizza together.
At twenty when she was on her third year in college, she met Eric Clawson in the dimly lit room of a viewing of the movie The Blob for a halloween fright night in the college. Eric was so into the movie that Jules frankly still to this day things is a ridiculous attempt at a horror movie, but finds it insanely amusing, that she teased him relentlessly after the lights came back on, not even knowing his name.
They hung out every single night for the fright week, watching all of the horribly made monster movies together but only giggling, and whispering to each other, and forgetting everyone else around them... After one month of friendship, they became... best friends. The two of them were best friends, completely joined at the hip for a year and a half.
Finally, one night after Jules had cried her eyes out because she was certain she was failing two of her classes, Eric held her, and they ended up kissing, and making out before falling asleep. Jules had felt like she had a crush on him, different than with just a friend for a while, but was uncertain until that moment.
After that night, it was clear, she was head over heels for him, as he was her. They dated for another two and a half years until they Jules graduated college, Eric having graduated a year before, and the day of her graduation, at twenty three years old, Eric proposed to her, and she said yes!
Time seemed to fly by after that point. They moved in together, after moving back to Michigan, Eric having grown up there as well, into a tiny apartment where they loved, and annoyed the fuck out of each other for a year. Living together, outside of college, and finally in the world outside of the dorms and lectures halls, things were not the same. Eric was progressively more and more aggressive, and distant, while Juliette was jealous, and possessive. She was always worried that he was lying, feeling uncertain. They moved into a house together, and got married anyway.
Still, they loved each other, more than anything. Moments were arise when Eric would stop being easily aggravated, and remove the distance between them, Jules would trust him, and they would have several weeks and months where they would have sex every single day, or every other day, hold each other, kiss each other on the way in and out of the house, grocery shop like they were the poster couple for romance and love, and even spoke about having children multiple times. Jules loved her job as a Detective, Eric enjoyed being a history professor. But sometimes...things were dark again. Jules would feel lonely, and untouched, Eric would feel smothered and like he wasn't trusted.
Then, eight months before her twenty ninth birthday, Richard died. Jules father died suddenly in a car accident, caused unfortunately, by his own drunk driving. So caught up in her own relaitonship, Jules was completely unaware that her father had started to drink heavily, unhappy in his marriage with her mother. Wracked with guilt, having barely went to visit her father since graduating, she blamed herself, and her mother.
Jules realized she didn't want to end up like her mother, and didn't want Eric to be her father. She made a vow to be better, but...not with Eric. As hard as it was for her, and for him, they both agreed it would be best if they divorced, mutually. No cheating involved, no lies. So Juliette thought. It was two weeks after they had divorced that she went back to the house that she had given up for him, that she noticed Eric had already moved in with another woman. Another woman was already living in the house they had bought together.
Eric admitted to having been speaking to the woman, Kimberly, online, for about a year, saying they never actually cheated, but, Jules didn't and still doesn't know what to believe. Grabbing the rest of her stuff, she decided, angrily, to move on with her life. Even if she still loved Eric, she was devastated by the death of her father.
It took a toll on her work as a homicide detective, and her mental health. It still does.
