    Neo tends to be quiet, but even when he isn’t, his words are blunt and frequently laced with underlying irritation. While he does try to be polite (albeit not exactly nice), getting on his nerves is a quick ticket to an explosion. Although, despite his tendency to be distanced and his dry sense of humor, he can be fun to casually hang out with and does enjoy company as long as he isn't prodded at. He's certainly capable of kindness towards those he cares for, but it’s harder to come by as he tries to limit the risk of becoming attached.

    Close relationships are difficult. Neo often perceives abandonment or criticism when it isn’t there and reacts to it, usually by distancing himself but sometimes with hurtful accusations that project how he feels onto the other person. His hard exterior belies deep emotional wounds, insecurity, and profound empathy– even though he tries not to give a fuck and struggles to understand the way he himself feels. No, he doesn't want to get a therapist.

    Neo’s family resided in a city neighborhood where crime was rampant. His father – a villain both in the community and in the family– contributed to it.

    Neo doesn’t know what made his father into a violent piece of shit or what drove his mother to choose that piece of shit as a lifelong partner in the first place. He was never close enough with either of them to ask. What Neo does know is that his mother’s kindness always disappeared whenever his dad was irate with him, which was often. It wasn’t often enough, however, for little Neo to cease trying to gain the approval of his parents. For the first thirteen years of his life, every shouting “lecture”, every bruise, every cigarette burn was forgiven with his mom’s tearful apologies accompanied by his favorite foods and promises that his dad could “do better”.

    He’d stopped believing them by the time he was in high school, doing as much as he could to make himself scarce around the house and coping how he could. Neo started working as soon as he could at a fast food place down the street, and his employers had no issues paying him in cash to avoid taxes, which allowed Neo to hide his savings from his dad. He moved out of his house and into a shitty apartment a few days after his eighteenth birthday, but not without confrontation. Trying to convince his mom to leave with him spiraled into a physical fight with his father, and while Neo "won", his mom still didn't want to leave. He hopes she’s doing okay, even if he’s still angry with her-- God knows she faced the brunt of her husband's anger after Neo left.

    Since moving out and graduating high school, he's continued working as a manager in food service. His life consists mainly of work and time alone, but he does have a few friends he sees from time to time.
