Aerosis

Aerosis was born a completely unremarkable boy into a completely unremarkable family, living in a completely unremarkable village.

Thus his formative years came and went, shaping the child into a kind-hearted, curious, and studious youth. One day, a wizard of great renown visited his quaint little backwater home, seeking an apprentice. Or so everyone was told. After much discussion, it was decided that Aerosis was to be the representative of the village, taken under the great scholar's wing to bring honor to their remote farming locale.

In truth, the wizard was not a kind one, nor did he have any intention of raising Aerosis to be a fellow practitioner of the arts. Instead, the arcanist took the young child and brought him to an underground lab where he experimented on the boy, hoping to find the secrets of immortality.

Indeed he did, as well; after years of unspeakable acts, he finally succeeded in making the now young man immortal, for all intents and purposes. He could not be killed by conventional means, and the effects of aging appeared to have stopped. There was only one small problem; he had no extraordinary means of healing himself from sustained injuries, and couldn't even fight off the effects of poison and disease! The wizard considered his otherwise successful experiment a failure, instead using Aerosis as a guinea pig for other experiments.

He tested new forms of magic on the once-human, taking careful notes of each and every reaction his otherwise human body had to forms of torture, disease and injury that would have destroyed even the strongest of men; indeed, while Aerosis' body may have survived his ordeals (mostly) intact, his mind and soul did not.

After a demonic summoning gone wrong, the arcanist was dead and the tortured immortal fled his confinement for the first time in decades...

Tragic circumstances have left the man a twisted shell of his former self. The only thought in his mind is seeking death, escape from the eternal torture of his own existence. Even that is a chore, however, as he does not believe he will ever find salvation, cursed to wander the world for the rest of time. Memories of his childhood lie buried deep underneath the scarred tissues of his mind, the idea of happiness crushed by the tangle of alchemy and magic that his soul had been subjected to.

However, deep underneath his hopelessness and pessimism, there is a dull spark of light to be found; While he cares not for his own well being, the suffering he has shouldered gives him a great amount of empathy for others. As someone who has experienced a thousand ways to die and lived through them all, he wishes strongly to keep anyone else from enduring as he has been forced to. Given that he is no stranger to sacrifice (and has everything to give), he will go to great lengths to see another's will to completion if only to distract himself from his own problems.

After all, to be idle is to remember his past, and chance letting his mind crack further under the strain...
