221B Baker Street is the London address of the incomparable consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his intrepid assistant Doctor John Watson. The flat consists of a couple of comfortable bedrooms, a modest kitchen, a single, large airy sitting-room, cheerfully furnished and illuminated by two broad windows. Visitors and tenants alike can expect to be heartily greeted by one Mrs. Martha Louise Hudson, the landlady (not to be confused with housekeeper) of both 221B and 221C.
Mrs. Hudson herself lives in the same building in a flat of her own next to a quaint little restaurant known as Speedy's Sandwich Bar. Sherlock won his way into Hudson's good graces and as such his upscale lodgings, after ensuring that her husband was executed for a double-murder in Florida. Due to his assistance, she allows the detective and his associate to have the flat at a much lower cost than what it's worth. According to Watson, it is in a prime location and suits the needs of his fastidious compatriot when the game is afoot!
The first-floor and reception area of the flat seems to always be invaded at all hours by throngs of singular clients or often undesirable characters where Mrs. Hudson would, against all better judgment, cordially offer tea or rousing conversations about trash telly before eventually permitting them up the stairs toward their intended target.
Once in 221B, there is a beautiful sitting room, complete with a fireplace and mantelpiece scattered with several objects, namely a knife plunged into the decadent wood where unfinished business and unopened letters lie beneath, punctured and prompting. In the room is also a table where important documents are kept alongside two chairs often occupied by Holmes and Watson where they address their hopeful clients. A desk sits between the two, massive windows, and remains almost constantly cluttered with both Holmes and Watson's workloads, technology, case files, curiosities, and the like. Painted on the wall was a yellow, rather peculiar smiley face, dotted with bullets fired out of utter boredom, courtesy of Sherlock Holmes.
Alongside the bathroom, which both men share as there is only one, is the doorway that leads to Sherlock's bedroom whereas John's is up the stairs and further into the flat, the doctor's only real sanctuary from the midnight toils of a restive Sherlock Holmes who shows an eccentricity and irregularity in his life that sorely tries the patience of both his flatmate and their landlady.
Sherlock's incredible untidiness, addiction to music at strange hours, occasional revolver practice within closed doors, his weird and often malodorous scientific experiments in the kitchen when St. Bartholomew's Hospital is not accessible, and the atmosphere of violence and danger which hung around him made him the very worst tenant in London, it would seem. Yet, the landlady stood in the deepest awe of him and never dared to interfere with him, however outrageous his proceedings might seem. She was fond of him, too, for he had a remarkable gentleness and dealings with certain people.
