It is not uncommon for an Awakening to be traumatic. One need only look at the Moros and their near-death experiences to know that much. But some horrors are not so bombastic. Sometimes the Awakening comes wrapped in a terror so commonplace that had it not occurred during that supposedly untouchable age of innocence, it probably would have been hardly worth noting. But for twelve-year-old Acacia, the dawn of her life as a Mastigos did so much shift her reality but rather shattered it into a million pieces. For that was the day she saw into the mind of her stepfather and bore witness to all the things he really wanted to do to her, what he had already done to his own daughter by blood. A once sweet girl who had yet to even have her first period was subjected to a grown man's sick fantasies, and the girl was sweet no longer. Instead, disgust, hatred, and rage festered and burned in her belly, and by her hand, she would see him suffer.

Unable to convince her mother to suspect the monster that called himself her husband, Acacia turned to her powers, navigating them more by will and instinct than by actual skill. She learned to take the thoughts to which he unknowingly subjected her and little by little slipped them right back like poison in his cup. And then she twisted the knife, filled them with her own disgust as she made him the victim in his own not-so-intrusive thoughts. In time, the man grew paranoid and erratic, always so very certain someone was onto him, watching him. Making him think of all the things he deserved. Everyone was out to get him, and Acacia was more than happy to push him to the brink. It all ended when Acacia's mother arrived home from work to find her stepdaughter sobbing, her husband having hanged himself, and Acacia humming as she baked a cake. It was the end of one monster, but there were so many more. Just walking out among the world. Other men who liked to hurt women and little girls. Men who the world wouldn't stop because punishing them meant saying their victims deserved justice, that women and little girls were people. A mere thirteen, Acacia had found her purpose. She would make them all suffer. It was justice.

For a time Acacia merely continued as she had, honing her skills with mind magic (albeit clumsily) by brandishing her particular brand of justice against her male classmates. A suicide accompanied by a reveal of their online history of what they liked to say about the girls there. A death by sudden beating from his fellows who couldn't seem to remember what roused them to violence there. She liked to get creative when it came to making her victims hang themselves with their own ropes, their own allies. One of her proudest achievements had been her freshmen choir director who liked to give special attention to a select few female students. He had been found by the band teacher with his severed member cradled in his hands. No one ever suspected Acacia. After all, manipulating the mind came with little physical evidence. As a person, however, as merely Acacia, she was a cold girl. Highly intelligent, eloquent, and ambitious, but distant and aloof. This was especially true when it came to her interactions with boys and men, her disdain clear with every chill glare and every pointed, probing word that came out of her mouth.

One day, Acacia found herself called down to the school counselor's office. Only instead of a bored social worker who had nothing better to do than butt into her life, she found herself face-to-face with a strange well-dressed man. With one look, she knew he was like her. A manipulator who saw and heard all that everyone tried to hide. And to her surprise, he greeted her with an easy smile and a job well done. That all the men and boys she had hurt deserved punishment. He told her what she was: a mage. A Mastigos. Then he told her what she could be. A Liberatore, one free who worked to unshackle the world from its chains. She could continue to work as she did, but more powerful and with the wealth of tools granted to her as a mage. It was a difficult offer to refuse, perhaps too good to be true. When Acacia showed trepidation, the man let her read his mind. She saw he told the truth. More importantly, she saw he in fact meant her no harm. She accepted.

Under the name Gentileschi, Acacia lives ever on the hunt, making prey of predators. In her day-to-day, she works as a legal aide for the district attorney's office. She does her job well, exactingly and mercilessly so. No one among her coworkers can deny she has passion. But clocking out does not mean any rest for the wicked. The prosecution merely continues when she gets home and starts tracking the world's rapists, abusive partners, men's rights activists, manosphere aficionados, pick-up artists, and all-around vintage misogynists. From there, Gentileschi gives them a taste of their own medicine until finally, she lures them into her trap. And once one hunt is over, another begins. It will never end, but if she's lucky, she'll have made a dent in the monster population by the time she's through.
