From the moment she was born she was another person's property, born a slave, raised as a slave, to work herself into an early grave. Her name was picked out of convenience, as her mother couldn't even name her. She was however lucky enough to be born with magic, so when it manifested she was taken aside and raised with other magic borns, to train to see how much they would be worth. November was on the powerful end of the spectrum, and they knew she would be hard to control. So along with a few others she was tied down and carved with several sigils to decide not only what magic she could use, but forbidding her to harm her owner, to forbid her even the freedom to end herself. Her own magic would power these scars, to make sure they were strong enough to prevent disobedience.
Some fell during the carving, some after from either shock or infections, till there was only a bit over a handful of kids left from that horrible event. November got trained with the sigils and shortly after she was sold for the first time. Her life out in the world began, scared but not allowed to show it.
Years past and she changed owners several times, she learned to read and write to make her masters job easier. She learned to fight to defend her master from murderous shadows in the night and she learned to kill so her masters wouldn't have to get their hands dirty. One day an assassin got a cut in on her, one of her sigils got a slight cut, not enough to break it, but to weaken it. The sigil of obedience was damaged. She was able to talk back or refuse orders, of course there was a penalty for doing so due to her sigil, but she could. Her owners got tired of her and she was sold again.
She was sold a lot due to being faulty, to have a mind of her own. Eventually a new law was put in place that freed the slaves, first kids and their parents, the ones still at the slave trainers, but later more older slaves that were already sold and bought were freed as well.
November was free. November having been freed from the mines was granted a new last name Friedberg. All slaves were granted a last name, to show that they now were free folks.
Because November was a magically bound slave, the magic tower collected her to free her from the magical binds. Her sigils were destroyed, but most of the scars would remain on her.
November, happy to be free but also a little lost, began to travel, maybe seeing the world would help her find her place. She knew how to do a lot of different work so she could take some small jobs for food or money along the way, just until she was certain where she wanted to be.
