Within it is written incantations and rituals, as well as relevant ingredients to her trade and their properties. She may cast any spell known to her in this book, so long as she recalls the proper incantation. In order to retain her memory she must study this book at least once every couple of days, and for each day gone without she runs the risk of fumbling or forgetting a spell, which could either cause her casting to fizzle out or have unintended effects or consequences. She may learn a new spell any time should it be taught to her or copied from another spellbook by inscribing it within her book and committing to study and practice.

    Being a necromancer, Avery's casting is themed around death. However, contary to what one might think, spells are not necessarily defined by their names. Necromancy uses an ancient, borderline forbidden language to control its form, and while written incantations set a guideline for casters to follow, they can be changed at a whim to alter their properties assuming the mage is skilled enough to do so. For example, a spell that drains life may be cast in several different ways depending on how the caster speaks the incantation. This also means that new spells can be created all the time. For those learning, it is often much easier to memorise named spells with prewritten incantations.

    Avery skill level is marked as adept. She follows written spells, but is talented enough to shape them with minor adjustments at her will, and is not powerful enough for large scale casting.
