  • Original Character Requirement

    Tumblr_inline_mx7ieoQEuB1rbrs85.gif

All Original Characters that are being designed for the enchanted realms (Neverland, Wonderland, or ANY kingdom old or new that you create) MUST be in some form of literature There are literally thousands of untapped fairy tale and disney resources - as well as works of fiction like Narnia and Lord of the Rings. (Please be sensible - and let us not turn this into Hogwarts)

IF you plan to use your original RP Character it MUST be from the land of forgotten stories from this point forward.

SECTION 1 - Creating an original character for the Once Upon a Time Universe

Pick your character. Who is the most likely to fit in with this Roleplay?

We are going to use Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This will of course be far less detailed that I would want creative role-players to be, but I will try to cover all the necessary format and guidance by using this as an example template.

    Here is his actual backstory:

Charlie Bucket is a kind-hearted, brave, but poor boy that lived with his mother, father and four bedridden grandparents. After winning a chocolate bar raffle giving him a tour of the mysterious Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory Charlie invites his grandfather to go with him - coaxing him from the bed. The factory is full of many magical wonders but Charlie is part of a test. The other prize winners are eliminated one by one in what appears to be incredibly quick personality judgments. By doing the right and noble thing in regards to being in the factory, Charlie receives anything he could ever dream - partnering with Wonka and gaining a brighter future and a lifetime of magical wonder.

The first thing is extremely important. The setting. In this case, it is a modern setting. It truly doesn't make sense to place him anywhere on Earth. Here is why Earth doesn't make sense: Earth is supposed to have no magic (Only very little) It is called the land without magic for a reason. As we know from the reading, Wonka's science borders on the magical. Secondly, I am thinking of involving Rumpelstiltskin as a major part of his history (Which we'll get to) but the Dark One couldn't get to Earth - otherwise - he wouldn't have needed the curse. So the land without magic is quite obviously out of the question.

The second solution might be the land without color. In terms of technology that's the perfect solution - however the wonka films were developed in color thus ruining the supposed fabric of that realm. And we don't want to dilute anything in the universe that is already solidified in its lore.

I have thought of a third solution! I message it to my GM for approval.

    Rumple,
I can't seem to find a setting for Charlie's history - so I decided to create a new realm in our universe. I am going to call it the Merchant's Crossing. The way it will work is that any advertisement that uses a created story as its persuasion point comes to reality here. The only way one can get to Merchant's crossing is buying their way in - and it's very expensive. Not only that, but only certain people know where the entrance is and their secret has been guarded by the lives of those in different merchant families.

That simple explanation is enough to create a new world. Once it is approved by the GM, he will post it under this members page. All Approved New Realms will also be added to the Map Key if necessary.

Now this is where the work comes in. Remember I said I wanted to involve Rumple into my history. I must message him for approval. Feel free and use this template:

    To the player of (character),

Hello, there. My name is ______ and I have just been approved to create a character for Once Upon a Time. I have some ideas for a storyline that involves your character. Here is what I am thinking: (Briefly outline the thought). I want to know if I have your permission before I write it up - I will of course send it to you before any publishing to see if anything needs changing.

Thank you! Please get back to me in a timely manner as I am working hard on this.

For us, our briefly outlined thought is as follows: I have decided to play Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and fit him into the universe. I thought it would be a great twist to have Rumple seeking out the oompa loompas in Willie Wonka's factory as a piece of the Dark Curse. I have already e-mailed the GM and received permission to create a new realm called Merchant's Crossing. The plan is that Rumple hadn't yet learned of the curse but was investigating a way to earth and found his way into Merchant's crossing - looking for answers there. It will conclude with Rumple being thwarted by Charlie and then found by the Dark One years after.

Perfect, once receiving permission for that, it's time to flesh it out. Let's examine Charlie:

Who do we want him to be?
What are his motivations? What is his life like now? Does he have any powers? If so - will they fit into the universe? Likes/dislikes? Romance? If he good/Evil/neutral/indifferent?

These are all very important questions I would consider before I even begin modifying.

I want to make Charlie a hard worker - willing to scratch, scrape, and claw to get anything he needs so that his family won't go hungry. I see him as a boy that gets picked on by all the glamorous advertisement creatures and merchants around him. I see him alienated further in that he's really the only one from a poor family in the entire Merchant's Crossing. So when he wins the yearly lottery and gets to go on a tour to Wonka's Factory - he gets incredibly excited. I see him as a boy Cindarella - kind of tossed aside and treated like dirt. In that sense, he will have a weakness for greed and an aloof - almost isolationist personality that he will carry into adulthood. This will fit him into a beautifully neutral spot as he has a darkside and a lightside and the all encompassing "Just wants to be loved and taken care of" inner core that is in so many Once characters.

As for powers we want to make sure that no character is more powerful than the Dark One. And if that character is even in the range of Emma, Zelena, Regina, or The Dark One then there better be a very very good reason for it. (Too much magic flinging around here and the plots going to explode). Luckily, in this case, if there is magic then it probably will be targeted. I think that the best magic for Charlie is not in him - but in wonkas chocolate bars. As long as he has the ingredients for different chocolate bars - they can have potionlike properties. Things such as Giant strength chocolate bar and silencing gum (Chewer loses voice for a period of time). Nerds (Makes people smarter for a period of time :P ) So next step - I message the GM for magic approval.

    Great - so
    For this example

Charlie is a young boy born to ___ and ___Bucket. They are the poorest family in all of Merchant's Crossing. A family that miserably slaves away for all the other citizens - never getting recognition. In fact, it was so bad that by the time Charlie's parents were a mere thirty-five - depression had set in to the point where them and Charlie's grandparents stayed in bed and slept all day and night if they could. If it wasn't for Charlie running around and doing errands so they could eat, most of the Crossroads would have forgotten about the Buckets.

Every year, the Wonka Factory had a lottery for a citizen and one guest to see the Wonka Factory. One year - Charlie was selected. He tried to get his grandfather out of bed but he wouldn't rise. Disheartened, Charlie went alone.

Wonka was a kind man, and Charlie was quickly captivated by him and the many wonders of his factory. They talked quite a bit about loneliness and being mistreated. They bond together in the first few hours with an unexpectedly tremendous amount of empathy shown by Wonka.

Around the same time, Rumplestiltskin was amidst his quest to find a way to the land without Magic. When he arrived at Merchant's Crossing - he speaks to Domino's Pizza's THE NOID - who has been wanting to ruin the chocolate factory for decades. He knows of the Dark One - and hoping to destroy the factory for good (Because that's just what he does) He tells him the Oompa Loompas are guardians of the most powerful weapon in the Enchanted Kingdoms aside from the author's pen. The dark one follows this trail but finds a bit of a problem - the oompa loompas have sworn their care into Willie Wonka. Willie Wonka keeps their secret hidden in his factory. During the Wonka Tour, while him and Charlie speak on a boat in the chocolate river, Wonka is teleported in black smoke and brought to Rumple. Rumple tries to make a deal with him to reveal the oompa loompa's secret - but Willie Wonka refuses and furthermore doesn't know it. He knew where it is and kept it safe but had too much respect for the oompa loompas to reveal their secret. Rumple threatens to kill Charlie if Wonka doesn't take him to the secret. The Oompa Loompas are furious and the loompa magic and the Dark One's magic wage war. During the struggle, Wonka and Charlie run in and steal the map to the Dark Curse. The Dark One defeats the Loompas and comes squealing after them. Wonka pushes Charlie into the elevator with the secret. "Nothing will be able to harm you in there! Take it somewhere safe!" Wonka shoves the secret to his magical chocolate into the boys vest with the oompa loompa secrets. "Promise me you will rebuild the factory!!"

"-I---I promise!" Swore Charlie. He takes off in the glass elevator.

Years later - Charlie is a man. He resides in Snow's Kingdom where he has begun rebuilding the chocolate factory. "I have finally mastered it!" He said to his assistant. "The inedible chocolate. Only one with pure intentions will be able to bite into it." The assistant shook her head. She never understood Charlie's fascination with odd chocolate inventions. After all, can't you just like chocolate for the taste? But - she loved him so dearly that she smiled broadly. "That's wonderful, Charlie!"

Charlie finally had a place to hide the Oompa Loompa Secret - keep it out of his conscious for good. He wanted so bad to find if Wonka and his family were alive. A knock on his door broke the reverie and when he opened it - there was his grandfather! After all these years...

    "G-Grandpa! You're out of bed."

His grandfather smiled as his hand went through Charlie's chest and ripped out his heart. "I'm going to need that Oompa Loompa secret now, Charlie. In exchange, I'll give you back your heart!"

So as you see - modifying a story to fit the Once Upon a Time Universe can be time consuming, require permissions, etc.

But - ask anyone who plays an original character here - it is WELL worth the work.

Section 2 - Converting your Original RP Character to fit Once Upon a Time Universe

    1.
Universal characteristics that don't apply in our universe cannot exist in your character's history.
For example - Magic is done a certain way here - it always comes with a price for the character to pay. The more powerful the magic, the larger the price. Furthermore - it is split into two categories - good magic and evil magic. Very basic. We cannot complicate things with different rules of magic such as divine magic and immunity magic etc. Universal laws exist in all literature - they should be respected here.

    2.
Powers and Abilities must be approved by OUAT Staff.

    3.
Using your Original RP Character does not exclude you from doing an RP History on them.
Lazy 1 to 2 paragraph descriptions of your character will not cut it here.

    4.
Original RP Characters can only have resided in Land of Forgotten Stories.
There are no exceptions to this rule. RP characters are not widely read - they were likely forgotten, unimportant, or incomplete stories. That is why they come from this land.
