  • Castle Coratiel isn't an inn--it's a home. Lord Brendel is hospitable to wandering characters, even repeat visitors, but he won't tolerate vagrants showing up every night to crash dinner. If you RP regularly in the dream you need a reason for your character to be here. Here's a list of possible professions your character could have, though it's not exhaustive. If you have an idea, feel free to bring it up with me in PMs or whispers. You're welcome to explore the dream and look for niches that need filling!

No matter what sort of character you play, you'll need to consider the setting. Characters are generally expected to keep to a semi-historical medieval European flavor in terms of religion, gender roles, magic, etc. The Setting page has more complete guidelines!
  • General Character Roles

    • Members of the court. Noblemen and women who stay at Coratiel for various reasons and lengths of time. They generally aren't expected to work, and may have their own retinues of guards and servants. Nobility lower on the social ladder may be expected to help out in some regard.
    • Advisers. Generally highborn, these are the people Lord Brendel turns to for advice. They might just be members of the court turned full staff.
    • Guards. They patrol the castle and the surrounding lands and stop scuffles, etc. Highborn guards and knights will generally be of higher rank. They don't wear explicit uniforms, but they're expected to wear tabards or cloaks with the crest and colors of House Fayne.
    • Servants. A catch-all! These are lowborn people tasked with keeping the castle operating smoothly. Their duties may include: cooking, cleaning, laundry, changing candles and sheets, working in the stables and baths, serving food and tea, etc. There's a loosely defined internal hierarchy amongst the servants.
    • Healers. They staff the castle's hospital. They may be magical healers or apothecaries--or both!
    • Craftsmen. People on castle payroll tasked with a wide array of jobs relating to upkeep. Smithing, cobbling, masonry, tailoring, roofing, brewing, baking, etc. They might unofficially sell their wares to travelers, but they won't have a shop front, etc.
  • Specific Character Roles

    • Steward. A high ranking person, probably noble, who does most of the actual work in running the castle. This person coordinates when food and supplies need to be bought, which servants are doing what and when, etc.
    • Jailer/inquisitor. Y'know, just in case. Probably also a guard.
    • Governess/scholar/teacher. A scholar who teaches Lord Brendel's younger sister, Amicitia, and any other noble children. Also an adviser and general knowitall. May teach lowborn kids if they have a soft heart.
    • Jester and/or court bard. The nobility are fans of such antics!
    • Court wizard. A scholarly sort of mage, probably one who attended a well known magical college or guild. Their role would be quite nebulous.
    • Gardener. Likely lowborn, this person is tasked with keeping up Coratiel's vegetable, flower, and herb gardens.
  • Discouraged Roles

    • Merchants and peddlers. These characters may be permitted to sell their wares within Coratiel's walls during festivals and other events, but it is otherwise prohibited. (That said, if they operate discreetly, that's a different matter.)
    • Farmers. These characters wouldn't work nor live in the keep, and so they generally wouldn't be there--except, again, in the case of open festivities. There is, however, room for a character who tends the castle's various gardens.
    • The unemployed. Coratiel has no time for slouchers! ("Being noble" is considered a profession, however.)
    • Ne'er-do-wells. Vagabonds, bandits, thieves, etc. Unless they're also gainfully employed by the keep and keep their miscreancy on the down-low.
