  • The Edge

Adapted from a text in Northkeep:

The Northern Edge is literally the northernmost edge of "the world," where the sea plummets into eternal mist stretching as far as eyes can see and wings can fly. These mists are known as the Grim Reaches, and they have no determinable end. The edge consists of one large island and several archipelagos.

The ocean is mercilessly stormy and bitter cold, giving it its name, the Ocean of Rime. Despite the choppiness of the waters, it's possible to sail all the way around the main island if you stay very close to the shore (especially when near the falls). On a clear day, if you look far out to sea away from the falls, you may see that the horizon looks slightly jagged.

The top portion of the island is alpine. The peaks are tall and steep like young mountains, though they are ancient--it's as if they are still growing. The coasts are all steep cliffs barring the rare rocky flat or pebble beach. The northeastern coast is scarred by deep glacial channels, known as the Black Fjords. Despite the sharpness of the mountains, there are still a few green valleys where some scraggly trees grow. Rivers sometimes occupy these valleys, leading off to the sea.

The Gravestone Isles northeast of the main island are impassable except to a select few; they have cliffs on all sides, towering waves, and snarling winds. From a distance, the islands are clearly mountainous and have the same Black Fjords as on the mainland.

  • The Black Fjords

The Black Fjords: staggering cliffs of black stone jutting against an iron grey sky, over an equally grey sea. Scrappy lichens and cold-weather plants eke out a harsh existence in the nooks and crannies.
