The Kingdom of Shatterguard was founded 230 years ago, after a lengthy period of civil war tore apart the former Kingdom of Corelond, and Sigeric son of Æscgar turned his former fiefdom into an independent kingdom. Sigeric earned the epithet of Shatterguard (Scatterweard) during the war by single-handedly defeating the personal guard of King Earic Corelond before the doors of his keep. Thus Sigeric took it as his family name and the name of his kingdom.
The region that Shatterguard occupies also contains a monument - near the town of Past - celebrating the legendary hero Durth, whose exploits are recorded in a (now fragmentary) poem known as the Lay of Durth. He is said to have risen against an usurper king of Strond (not at that time part of Corelond) named Thunderfist, wielding the legendary Spear of Earth (which has since become lost).
