I was wondering if this seemed like a good introduction into the first chapter of my book 'A Soul's Devotion'. Please let me know if it needs work! I have a few other ways I want to start the book, but I'm not sure which way is best. This is just to get the reader a brief feel of the setting and main conflict that will be explored throughout the book!
I may add more scenes later on for outside opinions, too. I can have a tendency to ramble in my writing, or telling and not showing. Help is always appriciated!
'Dinarah used to be such a lovely place to live, full of vibrant, diverse flora and fauna. But the rise of wizards and witches caused a decline in such wildlife. These ancient creatures and plants held magic within them that helped with increasing the success of spells and potions.
Overhunting and harvesting became a serious issue that damaged ecosystems. Luckily, more common creatures took their place so that biomes didn't collapse completely. But one race had a particular vendetta against the humans for this uninhibited culling.
Demons blamed the decline in magic on Earth to the growing lack of mana-producing life overall. The less of them that existed, the less magic circulated in the air. The art of magic was becoming scarce. And while wizards and witches tended to be much less powerful now, the protective wards that the stronger individuals sold could still manage to keep demons and their attacks at bay. The demons have made it their mission to set the natural order right, no matter what it might take...'
