Nearly two centuries have passed since the catastrophic eruption of Red Mountain, an event that blanketed Vvardenfell in a suffocating shroud of ash, lava, and toxic fumes. This cataclysm triggered the violent awakening of the nearby volcanoes in Ebonheart, unleashing a wave of destruction that mirrored the devastation wrought by Red Mountain itself.
The few Dunmer who managed to escape the turmoil found themselves in a dire situation, fleeing westward only to confront the relentless and harsh terrain inhabited by the Nords. Surprisingly, the Nords extended their hands in compassion, offering refuge and shelter to the weary refugees, demonstrating a sense of solidarity amidst the chaos that had engulfed the Dunmer's homeland.
Meanwhile, the city of Blacklight, known as Baan Malur, which had once flourished as a vibrant center of culture and commerce, now stood on the verge of collapse. The relentless ash and frequent earthquakes had ravaged the city, and the sudden influx of refugees seeking safety only intensified the strain on its already limited resources. The once lively streets were now filled with the exhausted and hopeless, all grappling with the harsh reality of survival in a city that struggled to support its residents. As supplies dwindled, famine took hold, heightening tensions among the populace and pushing them toward despair. The deteriorating conditions led to a swift decline in public health, with diseases spreading rapidly through the overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions, claiming the lives of many who were already weakened by hunger and hardship.
In the wake of the destruction, the survivors who had stayed behind in southern Morrowind faced a new wave of violence. Argonians poured into the lower regions of Morrowind, driven by a desire for vengeance against the Dunmer for the long-standing wrongs that had been perpetrated against their race.

Over 50% of the Dunmer population had been killed. 46% survived (if these figures are correct)
In the aftermath of the Red Year, worship of the Tribunal has been replaced by the Reclamation. Yet the strands of memory linger on Solstheim, the chant of ALMSIVI muttered by rebel priests and devotees of the old way.

6% of the Dunmer remained in Skyrim.

Red Year
Main article: Red Year
After the fall of Baar Dau and subsequent eruption of Red Mountain destroyed much of Morrowind, many Dunmer fled to Skyrim as refugees. Many eventually settled on the island of Solstheim, which was given to them by the High King of Skyrim at the time. Many more fled to Windhelm, the seat of the Stormcloaks resistance against the Empire of Tamriel. They live there in the Gray Quarter.

Before the cataclysm that lead to the mass exodus of Dunmer, several of the faithful of Azura received visions of the eruption of Red Mountain. Setting out for Winterhold, these Dunmer built the Shrine of Azura in Skyrim. The only remaining member of this group is Aranea Ienith. In the months after the cataclysm, many Dunmer started to return home to rebuild, only to be met by an invading force of Argonians.
