Rocky is a five limbed creature made of hard, keratin-like minerals. Mostly brown in coloration, there are teal sections of exposed portions of the body that send out echolocation signals to read and see the world around him, due to the lack of eyes. Each limb has a three clawed hand and is used to crawl around similar to a spider or a monkey. Parts of the surface of his limbs are etched in gold encrusted engravings, tattoo markers that have different meanings (his identification, his mate band, his family crest, his rank in his job and his mission crest), though there are also holes in parts of his body from atmospheric burns along the bottom side of his face and limbs. When eating, a sort of mandible-like opening will crack through his carapace at the bottom of his body, similar to a sea urchin. He wears leather pouches on his arms that contain the tools he uses for synthesizing material and repairs.
Gear & Extras
Eridian Meal Rations x4 - Eridians have to consume a mix of metals every 4 days. When Rocky’s rations run out, he will be able to synthesize alternatives using metals found in the environment or from scrap metal, but it will likely not be as fulfilling and will need to be consumed more often for effective energy use. Can only be used when suit is in ball mode.
Leather Tool Belt - A number of leather pouches sewn together with a stringy form of xenonite to carry tools, meal rations and other needs.
Xenon Manipulation Tools - A variety of tools used to manipulate, mold and weld xenon together into useful objects or devices. Some look similar to surgical tools, others look closer to something that might be used for weaving. Can only be used when suit is in ball mode.
Hand Precision Pliers - Two sets of hand accessories that are worn to help feed xenonite from the mouth of an Eridian into whatever they are making. These pliers can also be changed to weave different patterns automatically, stabilize the hands or to help undo previously set threads. Can only be used when suit is in ball mode.
Screen Visualizer - Looking similar to a crystal inset to a metal claw with wires, this device scans whatever it is pointed at and displays the information onto an interior panel of the xenonite suit, with specialized sand pixels being used to show the data in 3D form so it can be read by an Eridian. This is essential for reading screens or printed materials that humans can see due to color changes. It also is capable of reading the make up of an item that it is pointed at to show what elements are there and the amounts involved. Can only be used when suit is in ball mode.
Translation Device - A sort of calculator sized computer that charges from solar energy, which is able to translate eridian sounds into english words and play them out loud for people around him to hear. New words can be added by Rocky if suit is changed to ball mode.
History
Rocky was a Level II Engineer for the planet Erid selected to go on his species’ first ever space mission to save their sun from slowly dying out by a parasite known as astrophage. However, since it was the first time space had been ventured into and there were many things about space travel that eridians had not yet understood, Rocky had to sit back in horror as all of his crew slowly died from radiation poisoning. He tried desperately to save them, but without understanding what was going on, all he could do was return to his workshop in the lower bowels of the ship as he desperately attempted to figure out how to save his planet alone. Luckily, his workshop was one of the few places on the ship protected from radiation due to the walls being surrounded by astrophage being used as fuel, but this protection felt more like a nightmare as Rocky was left for over 46 years to drift in the vast expanse of space.
Eventually, another ship ends up meeting him-- this time, from another planet many light years away, piloted by a previously unknown intelligent species that works completely different from Eridians. This “Human”, known as Dr. Ryland Grace, is also overjoyed to find another ship, as his own crew had died on the trip over as well and he was certain he would be left to die alone up until this point. Clumsily both aliens figured out how to communicate through shoddy translation devices, attempting to accommodate for each other’s vastly different biological needs and work out how to solve their collective problem by using their expertise in their own fields to their advantage. Through a great effort of research, innovation and multiple near death instances, both of them manage to discover and collect a new species of micro organism known as taumoeba, a natural predator to the astrophage that can be bred and introduced to their respective solar systems. They bonded greatly during their journey, to the extent that neither of them feel like they could possibly leave the other. An incident that nearly leaves Rocky stranded and without any amount of fuel as he attempts to return to his planet causes Grace to come back to save him, and after careful deliberation, they both decide the best option is to bring Grace to Erid with Rocky.
It isn’t perfect. Erid’s conditions are harsh and hardly survivable for a human being. There’s next to nothing that can be used for food, and what food they do manage to scrap together doesn’t have the right nutrients. However, after countless hours of engineering, the collective attempts from some of the best scientists on Erid, and a very frightening scurvy issue, they manage to create a biodome that can support life for Grace and allow Rocky to live with his closest friend nearby, helping to teach his species about the beauty of Earth and all the technological differences that the different worlds can learn from one another. Rocky also got to return to his mate, Adrian, and their three hatchlings, which now have another family member in Grace to be able to grow up with. Life is good. ...That is, until all this dimensional nonsense happens, of course.
Rocky's universe would still be around, and Rocky himself would have ended up coming through another one of those pesky dimensional rifts. He would have only just recently slipped through as many of the other travelers have, so he wouldn't currently have a place to stay or reference for much of what is going on.
Abilities + Weaknesses
▲ PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY
Eridians have a “photographic” memory, capable of remembering everything that has happened and storing information much more efficiently. This makes them fast learners and quick problem solvers, as well as very good candidates for recalling essential details that other species might miss.
▲ MATERIAL SYNTHESIZATION
Similar to a spider, eridians can secrete a metallic substance of xenon. On Earth, this substance would be a gas, but due to the chemical biology of eridians their body is capable of turning it into a liquid that quickly hardens into a stiff and durable metal. Rocky specifically has hand apparatus tools to be able to manipulate this metal into finely detailed structures to create tools, sculptures, repairs to machines, etc. If heated to a specific temperature, like copper painting, the xenon can crystalize and become clear to create glass-like panelling, which can be manipulated and made to interact with different degrees of movement. Rocky especially is very fast and capable of utilizing xenonite to create models and repairs, due to his extra training and specialization in working with the materials.
▲ HEIGHTENED HEARING/ECHOLOCATION
Eridians have very good hearing attuned to being able to echolocate for long distances, which allows them to hear even the most subtle noises and be able to see through walls. This helps them to be able to visualize their surroundings and maneuver themselves without sight.
▲ DEXTEROUS CLIMBER
With five limbs that are able to move freely around the central region of the body, climbing with small hand holds and scuttling across difficult terrain is easy. Similar to a spider monkey, Eridians are comfortable being able to maneuver in any orientation and make quick work with their heightened spacial awareness.
▲ DURABLE STRENGTH
The rock-like exoskeleton of Eridians is extra protective, especially when supported by a xenonite suit’s outer layer. The actual Eridian body is deeper inside the rock carapace and is not damaged by exterior chipping or breakage, allowing them to be able to regrow limbs and shrug off superficial hits. Their limbs are also powered by a specialized water pump system that allows them to manage great feats of strength when picking up or breaking items-- the only problem is being able to get that item into the right atmosphere to do it.
▼ ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
As stated before, Rocky cannot be in a normal atmosphere that humans live in. The temperatures are too low, the air isn’t pressurized enough, and the ammonia levels are small enough that the air literally burns the inside of the carapace. Eridians can survive for almost 15 minutes at most in those conditions, but they will be severely damaged and end up catatonic for weeks until their body can recover. This means that he has to use his suit for everything, a cramped and clumsy solution that makes interacting with the world difficult.
▼ SLEEP LIKE THE DEAD
Eridians have to sleep every 3 days, staying asleep for a total of 12 hours, and within that time they are completely unable to move or wake. This leaves them extremely vulnerable to danger and can make them very anxious if not watched over by a trusted individual. Because of this, Eridians rely heavily on one another and community, which may make them more desperate to trust and bond with others.
▼ WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM
Generally, anything that gets in their atmosphere may be likely to affect them badly, from unknown illnesses and parasites to radiation. Perhaps this is at its worse when Eridian shedding happens. Eridians must shed their outer shell twice a year, during that time their body becomes extremely vulnerable and volatile as their carapace begins to regrow. The whole process takes around 5 days to complete and often leaves them having to recover from sicknesses or damages they might have sustained during that time.
▼ SENSITIVE HEARING
The echolocation, while great, leaves Eridians with no way to handle loud noises. Heightened levels of audio for long periods can damage Eridian hearing, make it near impossible to navigate, and give extreme headaches with a side of dizziness.
