  Background

  
  Jack was born a peasant, and while he was still a child his parents were killed in a skirmish during one of the many wars the nations of his world were consistently involved in. While normally orphans are readily taken in and cared for by the surrounding community, around this same time Jack's powers began to manifest in a particularly dangerous way. He was capable of conjuring a powerful snowstorm around himself, but had great difficulty controlling it, particularly when his emotions were unstable - a difficulty that did not mesh well with his situation at the time. Ultimately, because of the danger he posed, it was decided that Jack would be left in his original home, which was a ways into the forest, and the community would care for him as they could.
  
  Without much immediate guidance or support, Jack floundered for a short time, but quickly learned to fend for himself. It turned out that Jack was very resistant to the cold that often pervaded his home, and quickly learned to hunt, forage, and live in the frozen forests of his people with little assistance.
  
  He lived like this for many years, until, when he was sixteen, he happened to be making a brief visit to town at the same time that a military recruiter was passing through. Feeling a sudden desire to create some change in his monotonous life, Jack signed up and left his home within the week for one of the army's training camps. There he finally began to get a true handle on his powers, and his long years in the snow coupled with his natural talent allowed him to pass through his favored terrain with great stealth and ease.
  
  Once out of training, Jack quickly distinguished himself and began to rise through the ranks. Much to his surprise, he found a significant amount of meaning in fighting for his country, though he much preferred to defend his own people rather than attack others, particularly after he spent some time 'undercover' in one of the countries they were at war with. He still fights for his country, of course, but these days Jack is less quick to look down on other cultures than he once was.

  He likes to tinker with things (mostly weapons) and try to improve them, though he doesn't have any formal training in it. He also still has extra trouble controlling his subzero ability when particularly emotional.
