The Shape in the Woods
He did not look out of place. The elf that strode through those trees moved like a shadow, barely making a sound or leaving a leaf out of place, moving as though the forest parted to allow him passage.
His equipment came from the forest.
The man's gear all appeared hand-crafted with attention to detail and careful planning. A thick woolen cloak, hooded, fell heavily over head and shoulders and tied at the front through means of thick cordage. A dark grey in coloration, the hem of the hood is lined with soft, white and gray rabbit fur. It bears no sleeves, and drapes long enough to almost touch the ground, large enough it could be used as a blanket. Beneath, simpler clothing could be discovered of twined plant fibers, likely hemp. Cream-colored, worked into a soft fabric, it drapes as a short-skirted tunic and baggy stocks, held up by a buckskin leather belt and clasped with slightly tarnished brass. Six small belt bags, each palm-sized, hung from this belt carrying various herbs, spell components, and objects of interest to the fellow. A pair of knives also were sheathed to him; a hunting knife, and a smaller carving knife, both no doubt used for butchery of some kind. Thick leather boots cuffed to the knees, tapering into elegant, narrow toes and thick, tough hide soles. They are tied shut from the top of the foot all the way to the knee with leather thongs. The gloves he occasionally wore were of the same fashion; almost elbow length, and held to the body through ties.
A leather backpack held most of his belongings, the first noticeable object a bedroll lashed to its exterior. Tough hide formed the outer portions, the inside sewed with padded woolen cloth and a slightly flat pillow of folded fabrics. Strapped beneath this bedroll is a finely crafted hatchet, rich red-brown wooden handle giving way to a steel axe-head. It's design was simple, and likely was purchased. Within the backpack, notable items included a brass tinderbox full of kindling, the exterior decorated with organic baroque designs. A small separate bag held twine and several fishing hooks. A whetstone settled within an inner lining pouch, hand-sized, bearing scratches of use. A medical kit resides within a strong, unyielding leather box, containing various bandages, salves, small potions and tonics. Bundled to the side is one large water-resistant sack decorated with layering duck feathers on the outside, useful for carrying a large amount of items at once or draping over the head of a bedroll while sleeping. A single leather tie, complete with golden eagle feathers, seems to exist purely to tie the man's hair back.
Finally, a masterworked longbow lashed over his back, bound with a leather grip. Light carvings, too shallow to compromise the weapon, depicts a long branch of willow leaves all the way down the bow. It comes with a hardened leather quiver, the image of two fighting stags burned into the face of it. The arrows within are cedar arrows with non-hooked obsidian arrowheads and multicolored fletching, taken from various birds wherever available. The wood appears slightly blackened in places, indicating the elf may have made these himself during fireside nights.
Those hands were rough and calloused.
He moved like a part of the wild.
He was bigger than a lion.
His fur was the color of red autumn leaves.
He moved like an ethereal beast.
Those enchanting eyes held more within than just beast.
