  • A Story of Flint Boy

    Allow me to start by saying that this is a rough adaptation. The original story was hard to understand, while the ideas it conveyed were not the most clear. I did my best, though, and I hope that you all appreciate some obscure lore thrown in the mix.

    Once there lived the Flint People and the Bear People. They quarreled, the Flint People and the Bear People. It became a terrible quarrel, and many lost their life. As the Flint People would go hunting the Bear People would lay in wait, they would kill the Flint People. Soon, less and less were coming back home.

    But the Flint People were many. They moved to the Sweat-House. The Bear People killed them all, the Flint People. Only one came home. Rock Woman. She sat in the sweat-house worrying and crying. "They are all dead! They are all killed!" So she hung many bows and arrows and quivers. She wept and wept for days, but one grandchild lived. One boy. He returned and spat upon the ground in the south side of the Sweat-House. He cried to Rock-Woman. "Look upon the ground Grandmother. Look! Hang a bow for me, and if I die, I shall return!"

    And so she did. In the middle of the night she looked upon the spit. All the men had been eaten up, the Bear people had devoured them all. Suddenly there was a cry out of the spittle. A baby! A boy! He was alive again, just a babe! "Who is the child?" She asked it. "Una Una!" It said, it was him, the grandson. She rose to her feet and picked up the child, she carried him and tended him all through the night. The child grew so fast. Through the night he was a young man. "Grandmother! Be quiet!" He said, "The Bear People are outside!" When the sun came up, he was already grown. Fully grown, he said, "Grandmother, give me the bow!" "I will not!" She said, "I will not give you the bow, it is dangerous outside. That is how we were all eaten. The Bear People, they ate us all."

    The young man put his hand out for a bow. "Give me a bow, Grandmother. I will go outside shooting." "I will not!" "I am not afraid, I will go outside. Let me have a bow." And so, she gave him a bow. He pulled it to himself. But the bow broke, another was given to him, it broke as well. A third bow was given to him, he pulled it to himself and it broke! He was strong, this Flint-Boy. Very strong. Finally he said, "Give me a rough-sinew bow, Grandmother." And so she did. He pulled it to himself once, it did not break. Twice, it still did not break. Three times, and still the bow held. "This is a good bow." He said. Then he saw two small eyes looking in from the smoke hole of the Sweat-House. "Grandmother! What is that looking in from above!?" "What does it look like? What do it's eyes look like?" The grandson looked again. "His eyes are small, Grandmother. They are small." "Oh indeed?" Said the Rock-Woman. "That one is a small eyed Bear Person." The grandson looked again. "Grandmother there is another looking in!" "What do his eyes look like?" "They are big Grandmother, they are very big." "Then perhaps that one is a Jack-Rabbit. Jack-Rabbits have big eyes."

    It was then that Flint Boy went out. "I shall go to the South, I shall go about." He stated. "Very well, go about, go south. But do not go too far." "Do you have any acorn bread?" He asked Rock-Woman. " "Yes." She replied, and then gave him her bread in one round lump. He put his acorn bread in his pack. Now what many didn't know, is that it was a special acorn bread. It was made of Ground up flint.

    He traveled till he came upon a camp of Bear Women. They were out digging Earth Worms and had left their teeth by a fire to keep dry, as the sky was heavy with rain. Sneaking down, Flint Boy stole their Bear Teeth and hid them in his pack.

    Flint Boy laughed and laughed. "Who is it?!" They asked, "Well come on all of you!" He spoke bravely. He had all their teeth and so they could not bite him. "Give me something to eat! I am hungry!" "We have no food, otherwise we would give you something to eat." "Hehe!" He laughed. "You are afraid!" "We are not afraid!" They retorted. "Are you not hungry then?" Asked the Flint Boy. "Yes." They said. "Then come, I have some acorn bread. I will give it to you." And so he drew forth the bread and gave a piece to each of them and they ate with hungry greed. "I shall go back home now." And so he bid them adieu.

    When Flint Boy god back home he called to his grandmother. "I have seen many women." At the fire, the Bear Women were sick for the bread had made them so. They had all fallen dead as what they had really eaten was flint. And so, the Flint People had their vengeance at last.
