Nicoletta was and continues to not be your regular Giovanni. Where most of the family are groomed to one day don the familial legacy of all manner of disturbed vampirism, Nicoletta at not even a year old had been spirited away by her mother upon discovering the criminal activities of her husband, Claudio Giovanni. Alessia then raised her daughter in the safety of her sculptor father’s countryside home, away from the corruption and violence of the mafia that plagued life in the city. Nicoletta grew up under her mother’s maiden name, with an idyllic and often sheltered childhood, spending her time after school learning the art of sculpture under her grandfather. A determined and strong-willed child, the girl was a prodigy, soaking up her nonno’s teachings like a sponge, even outpacing his own as she edged ever onwards towards adulthood.

Such certainty of the future would soon be challenged, however, by a trip to the city to showcase the work of grandfather and granddaughter. Far from home and in the thick of Italian cosmopolitanism, Nicoletta caught sight of the corruption and undercurrents of fear beneath the facade of shiny buildings and fashionable socialites. And no one said a thing. Incensed by the injustice, Nicoletta began sneaking out at night and writing down her observations, who she saw, what she heard. Then came connecting the dots, then researching the papers on just how to announce the findings of a country bumpkin and make them sound legitimate. Before leaving the city to return to her grandfather’s quiet home, Nicoletta submitted her story. In just weeks, two names were on all of Italy’s lips; Giovanni and Nicola Leonetti, the reporter who had broken the biggest story of the decade.

For the next five years, Nicoletta played the dangerous game of exposing one of, if not the greatest crime family in all of Italy. While the Giovanni family went on a years long tear to find the enigmatic upstart reporter divulging their dirty secrets, the young woman’s lionized persona of Nicola remained untouchable. And no one would ever suspect a little country girl of sticking her nose where she shouldn’t. Take on an alias in a bustling city far from home and suddenly you were completely anonymous. All it took was one interview to compromise her meticulously crafted anonymity. Had she known tailing the Giovanni’s would have put her face to face with her father, Nicoletta might have stuck to sculpting. But you can’t rewrite the past, and she had come too far to stop now.

Even amid her estranged father’s attempts to reconnect (and always insisting they meet at night), attempts Nicoletta refused to entertain, she continued her work. And her investigations of the notorious Giovannis were only getting stranger, more disturbing. The rivalries between mafia families were growing ever more dangerous, and Claudio’s interest in a seemingly insignificant girl did not go unnoticed. It did not take long to connect the dots. After months of failure, Claudio finally convinced his daughter to meet with him with the offer of information. Nicoletta arrived early, and had barely set a foot inside the church that was to be their meeting place before a bullet lodged itself in her stomach. In and out of consciousness, the only thing Nicoletta remembered was pain and then more pain, the latter far more excruciating than anything she had ever felt in her entire life. Whether she wanted it or not, she had joined the family.

These days, Nicoletta runs damage control for the Giovanni, running stories under a different pseudonym every few decades debunking any suspicions of supernatural activity that could potentially violate the Masquerade. Ever a logical fact-based voice of reasons amidst tin hats, the Giovanni’s most reluctant (and and perhaps most heavily scrutinized) family member has proven vital in upholding the veil of Kindred secrecy. Should one find themselves up in the middle of the night, they might find an Italian chirp of a voice emitting from their radio whose topics range from the ins and outs of current events to dishing the dirt on more historically-based mysteries. Nicoletta’s personal radio station/podcast is her own pet project, and if dead men tell tales, she’s telling their side of the story. So far no one’s questioned her sources. Despite clan affiliations, Nicoletta still insists on going by her mother’s maiden name, a point of contention among the more traditional of her clan.
