The Beginning…
Butterflies of various colors and shades fluttered within her sights the moment Erissa had opened her eyes, almost as if they welcoming her to the world. The wild animals of the forest drew closer, wanting to catch a glimpse of the birth of a Halfling: half neko mortal and half goddess of nature. Heterochromia hues of emerald and blue, colored her eyes; Curiosity lit her baby features as her gaze flicked around in the arms of her mother, Gaia, and catching the sight of her father overhead, peering down at her with love. The views of her parent’s adoring smiles drew close and blocked out the blinding sunlight above them. Tiny sapphire furred ears crowned the soft nest of her short auburn locks, almond shaped eyes adorning her circled face with a button nose with a leaf tattoo that is as big as a size of a quarter underneath her right. Stubby hands clutched up at the faces, the newborn’s coos filling the forest atmosphere while the butterflies swirled around the blessed family.
However, the peaceful times didn’t last….A contract with the other deities above was made to ensure the natural balance of both realms:Unwillingly, according to the stated conditions, Gaia had to leave her child and lover on the day of Erissa’s first birthday. As Gaia said her final farewells, she places a gently kiss on top of her baby’s head, tears trailing down her unblemished complexion. She caresses the male neko tenderly with her fingertips and kisses him one last time before she held her family in a loving embrace. The father struggled to keep his composure of assurance that he would be all right and that their child will grow up beautifully.. but silent tears trailed down his cheeks. In his arms was Erissa, who wailed and struggled in his grasp, trying to grab her mother as Gaia stepped over into the hazy surroundings of the deity realm. The goddess turns around one last time, sorrow explicit on her features as she kissed her fingertip, blew towards Eri’s direction, and muttered. “Ngiyohlale nawe , imbali enhle wami. (I will always be with you, my beautiful flower.)” With that her time was up, materializing into the light and the parting birthday gifts Erissa had received was a dark blue silhouette of a butterfly tattoo on the back of her neck and a garnet jeweled necklace that hangs around her neck nestled against her breasts.This contract set a time limit for how long Gaia (Or any other deity) is able to stay with their family. The condition for allowing her to interact with a mortal was created to prevent her and the others from spending too much time with her family and neglect her own duties as a deity.
Her father had struggled from the beginning of trying to appease his own father’s anger and expectations before meeting Gaia, eloping with her and running away to the forest where they had lived and had their child. After Gaia’s departure, he had taught her how to speak the common language, civil etiquettes and manners, raising her as best as he could to provide. As she grew and developed, the Halfling resembled her mother more than her father only bearing the qualities of his feline characteristics and that single blue hued eye. He provided as much as he could for Erissa despite him bearing a longing heart to see Gaia once again.
In the other realm where the deities looked over the mortals, Gaia watched over her little family with a sad gaze, yearning to be with them. One day, the goddess was caught helping the crops grow for her lover as he farmed and as a deity, she is not allowed to favor a mortal over others.. Therefore, a punishment was ensued, the male neko was touched by an incurable plague soon taking his life and leaving Erissa (who was now at the age of three) grieving alone in the forest to fend for herself.
Gaia, morning at the fate of her lover and child, she pleaded the others to come to a consensus to allow her, the living proof of her lover one last protection, a guardian to protect her from the dangers of the world. With permission, Gaia summons a nearby great wolf to ask for him to protect and care for her child as her favor. The great wolf bowed low, accepting the favor from the nature goddess and bounded his way towards the general direction where the child stumbled and sobbed for her father.
Three year old Erissa was mourning, wanting the gods and the goddesses to bring her father back to her when the great wolf had found her. Snot was running down the female’s dirtied face, cuts and bruises marked her body from falling over as she wandered deeper into the forest..
“Ingane (child).” the wolf projected to her in a deep voice that was granted by Gaia so he’d be able to communicate with the demi goddess. “I yathunywa ngumama wakho ukuba umvikeli yakho endaweni yabo. uyophepha manje. ( I was sent by your mother to be your protector in their place. You will be safe now.) Erissa just stared. Eyes wide at the fact that the animal had spoken to her despite it being a language which she vaguely remembered what her mother spoke.. All she had understood was Mother (umama) and immediately she went running towards the wolf, who had tensed up at the child’s embrace. He awkwardly craned his neck around, engulfing her within the cover of his fur as she poured her sorrows out against him for her parents.
From then on, Erissa had named the great wolf Sasha. She learned the deity language and common language which she had retained from her father’s lessons as she grew in the comfort of the forest… The girl blossomed, her gifts as a demi goddess, though limited, she is able to control thesurrounding natureandMake flowers bloom, trees grow from sapling, etcheal minor injuriescuts, gashes, only external wounds.
Still, the peace didn’t last long as the civilized population expanded, grew, and colonized. They extended their reaches to grasp at whatever they could grab within their greedy palms. Forests slowly began to diminish, either cut or burned as they were cleared for more plots of land.
A settler wonders out too far into the forest to explore but while doing so the male had spotted Erissa out in the open, alone. The male had approached her trying coax her in an effort to bring her with him as an exhibition spectacle because of her unusual eyes. That was when Sasha had attacked him in an effort to take Eri back, muzzle going for the neck not long before multiple gunshots rang out clear from the other side. With a whine, Sasha’s body’s tumbled over, blood coating his silver lined fur, and eyes resting on Erissa in worry for the child. The men scared out of their mind, began to light the forest with fire in an attempt to burn the wolf who was still breathing. Tears streaming down her face, Eri knelt down next to him, sobbing, “You’ll be okay! You’ll…” she choked, vision blurred by her tears, knowing that whatever she could do would be invane. But she had to do something! Sasha took a deep breath, wincing as his big eye rolled to the child, “Leave me, Child.” He spoke in common, speaking to her in a tired tone. “Or else you will burn with me too.” But stubbornly, she shook her head, attempting to do what she could to cover up the wound however her strength wasn’t enough as her body began to become sluggish. With an irritated bark, he pushed her away, throwing Eri out of clear from the forest fire and collapsed. “Sasha! ... Sasha .. sicela .. vuka .. Musa ngiyeke ... sicela don- (Sasha ... Sasha.. please.. wake up.. Don't leave me alone... please don’t..).. The last thing she saw on Sasha’s muzzled face was a wolfy smile as a burnt tree trunk crushed him, ending his misery.
Once the forest fire had died down, she went back to bury what was left of his body into the earth, making a makeshift grave for him.
She whispers, “Umhlatshelo wakho ngeke ize . Ngiyowenza ukusetshenziswa konke onginike , Sasha . Kwangathi umphefumulo wakho uthole ukuthula Ngithandazela ukuba wena nomama manje . Ngiyabonga .. ngiyakuthanda . (Your sacrifice won't be in vain. I'll make use of everything that you have given me, Sasha. May your soul find peace and I pray that you are with my mother now. Thank you.. I love you.)”
With that, the neko left her world, the only world that she knew, to be away from all the sad memories… for everything that she loved were taken away from her. First her mother, father, Sasha and now her beloved forest was in ashes. Now she roams around the world, running from her memories and wanting to drown out the sorrow with new sights and people, to expand her horizons as much as she could with the life that was protected countless of times by her loved ones…
