• Biography

  Is there anything tragic about an ordinary life? A life lived without the parental means being excessive. A life where teasing started, and there were jeers this way and that. An ordinary life for an ordinary man. The most auspicious thing about him was the bizarre striping patterns his family hand. It was no wonder why his family name was Blacke. The originators of that must have thought they were so clever. Perhaps the original tribesmen, the clan leaders, the pack masters, thought it was a sign of the devil. The etymology of his last name was lost on Harujai simply attributed as an open means for children to mock him for what he was. A child who sat at the lunch tables during recess reading. A child that would have had a substitute teacher repeat a science lesson just to hear it again. A child that felt alone and neglected. An ordinary child.
  
  

  "When did you start these feelings?"

  "When did it start? I don't remember to be honest. When do kids start noticing the differences in one another, and when do the kids start feeling one phenotype is superior? It's such an ephemeral thing, but it almost seems necessary. A giant, ritualistic purging of innocence and a rock-hard resolution that someone is inferior to you. Maybe it is just an animalistic urge. I think we might have some sort of intrinsic desire to position ourselves over one another. Don't you? It just happened, but I'm still alive so it couldn't have been that bad. Some choose suicide, right? So it wasn't that bad. I got through it. I wish others could too, but I can't change that. It is what it is. I turned out alright? Even bruised fruit can be used to make jam."

  
  
  The conclusion of primary school and the continuation into secondary school was the same. Teachers were blind to the cruelties of other children, and the segregation only got worse. The feelings of disillusionment with society increased. With a wider student body, there was a chance to make friends. Real friends. Good friends. An attempt to start over and slide into the cool crowd failed, but that was alright. Led to group with some other outcasts, they were able to share in their unusual fascination of various subjects. Science still called to Harujai Blacke, but so did medicine. Giving up his childhood dream, he decided he would become a doctor. They were noble. They made money. They saved lives. They were respected. It was science based, and there was room for great improvement. He could see that straight away. Killing cows by cutting arteries to measure blood pressure? How barbaric.
  
  Confrontations with his father were getting more and more violent. Harujai was beginning to cop an attitude as most angsty teens tended to do, but his dad didn't seem to like it. Regularly he would call Harujai a bastard and belittle him. Tell him that he was a little shit.There was a period where Thomas tried to push him to the ground and start a fight, but Haru wouldn't have it. He simply shouted for him to stop and 'Look at what you're doing! Stop dad, please!' Forced to be a voice of reason at an early age especially when his two sisters were born. For all her hard work, his mother tried to help, but even she was prone to violent and angry outbursts. It was not just his father that tried to throw him out of the house. One cold night, his mother threw him out and locked the door saying she didn't cared where he went. Uncertain of what to do, he climbed into a box along the side of the house curling up without shoes, and only the lightest of clothes. His blanket was the flap of cardboard. Almost an hour later, as Haru Blacke started to drift off to sleep his mother came for him scared he had walked off. Revealing himself, she snapped "Oh, there you are. What the hell were you doing in there?" Haru replied smartly "Trying to sleep. And I was almost there." Which earned him a reply of "I can leave you out here if you like." Things were not well, but he wouldn't admit it. Every kid went through this. He wasn't special.
  
  

  "Can you tell me a little bit about your secondary school?"

  "Secondary school? What would you like to know. I mean, sure it got better. What isn't better about girls getting tits? It's rather remarkable actually if you think about it. Hormones start coming out, you start noticing things right as they're blossoming and opening their petals. Curves develop, hips start to...sway through the halls. I swear, the person who designed the pleated skirt was a perverted old man. Seriously. Just watch a girl walk up stairs in it. It sways from side to side in excess of the hips. I could study skirt physics for the rest of my life, and it would not be a wasted life. Oh, right. Secondary school. Same shit as before? Cliques, failed attempts at integrating myself into other groups. I just focused on the schoolwork. For the first time I wasn't bored. Physics became an important subject to me, but so did the medical sciences. The body works brilliantly, and the concept of cells? Blew my mind. I knew there was something smaller in there... how did they move, this minuscule life boats? .... .... .... Girls? No there weren't any girls for me. Who wants to go out with point dexter? I was fat, and then after i lost the weight I was lanky. Entirely undateable material. But now look at me? Fit as a fiddle. It all worked out for the best, right?"

  
  
  After graduating primary school as valedictorian, he had established his intellectual prowess rather succinctly. His dry wit, and biting sarcasm made him some friends or pushed people away quickly. It had a tendency to do the latter, and as he progressed through his life isolating just a few people that could tolerate him. He grew quiet and guarded, and even among his friends he simply would be rather reactionary. He wasn't a man who had a lot of confidence, and it had been lacking since the start of secondary school but only grew more problematic. Still, he felt that this was just normal. You were supposed to get beaten down before you could get back up. Besides, he deserved it.
  
  The work paid off though, and Harujai went to Oxford University on a full scholarship proving that you didn't have to be rich to go to a good school. Free of parental restraints, this was when Haru began to blossom. Though still not a big socialite, he stuck to his classes and found the freedom of pursuing whatever he wanted entirely addictive. A relatively good boy, he began to drink and smoke marijuana on occasion, but his focus was on the sciences. Engineering, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and all the budding hybridization therein. Haru's intellect continued to shine, and he was often invited to the professor's weekly evening gathering to talk and discuss the latest scientific breakthroughs and their implications. Surprisingly, so long as there was reason and facts behind it, Haru understood it at an exceptional level, and since he had the freedom to do it all on his own time, he did so. Eventually, he met a girl. She was a wonderful, artsy girl. His polar opposite. Whereas he loved the smell of a musty library, she loved the scent of acryllic. She could wax poetic about literature and the wonders of social interaction, and he would agonize the angles chemical bonds formed. They were truly blissfully happy, and from their sophomore to junior year they had a fierce love.
  
  She died Junior year in a carriage accident. Upon investigation, it was revealed that at a party Haru was unable to attend due to studies and finals, she was involved in some wagon races. Both drivers were extremely intoxicated, and hers ended up veering off the edge of a cliff. They fell into the ocean, and the waves knocked her unconscious where she subsequently drown. Haru didn't leave his room save to get food and exchange homework with a friend to turn in for a month. He wears a claddagh ring with her name inscribed on the inside. It was rumored that she was seen wearing a similar one at the party, but the heart was turned out.
  
  There were rumors that the two would marry once graduated.
  
  

  "So who was Annabel?

  "...What? ... Annabel? ... Why would you ask about that? Go read in the school paper. It was all over there. Front page news. Talk of the school. No, it's fine. Look, it is what it is. Sometimes we lose people, but they're just people. There's nothing special about them, y'know? People come and go always. We move on. That's all there is to it." (NOTE: During the entire answer his left thumb rubbed the band of his ring.)

  
  
  Working in a research lab on campus after he graduated, he quickly slipped into a graduate program at the University of Cambridge. There was not much activity from him. Again, his life continued to be ordinary. He worked, slept, and ate. All semblance of a social life was gone, which was normal for grad students. He kept telling himself that he was okay, and that there wasn't anything wrong. If there was one thing he learned in god awful Psychology 101, it was that if you repeated something you could believe it and make it true. Everything was alright. He was happy. This was normal. It was good.
  
  Graduating quickly, he slipped into a string of post-doc positions in various colleges across the world. He spent two years in Germany, two in France, and three in Japan before finally being granted an assistant professor position at his Alma Mater. Since then, he became obsessed with knowing everything, and the first thing to learn was to live forever. Since college, Annabel's death had festered terribly in his heart. No woman had come close, though many women had joined him in his bed. They were used to console him. To provide him the warmth that a person needs, but he wasn't willing to admit. He craved intimacy, but he just wasn't concious of what that feeling was. He had convinced himself that he was numb, that the emotional side of him was dead, and that he was pure logic and better for it.
  
  All around him he saw the flaws of his fellows and students. They were slow, daft, bogged down by emotions, and all he saw were their darker tendencies. Haru's research began to take on a more sinister route. He was going through an alarming amount of lab mice, and the graduate students working in his lab grew suspicious of what Haru did when everyone else left and why they'd find him sleeping in his office nearly every night.
  
  

  "Can you tell us about your research and departure from Oxford University?"

  
  "...My research? ..Oh. Look, it's a simple fact that everything has a carrying capacity. Only a certain number of creatures can be supported by an ecosystem. Population growth is linear, then logarithmic, then it crashes. It's as simple as that. Look at the population growth of humanoids, hmm? It's starting to speed up. It's very subtle, but it is starting to do it. In a hundred years we'll be well into log-phase growth. What? No, I don't think that's a long time. You have any idea how long we've been evolving or how old the planet is? We're talking about thousands of orders of magnitude here and many thousands of thousands more until the end of time. I could start counting the atoms in this table, and soon I would run out of atoms in the table, then the world, then our solar system. There aren't enough atoms in the entire known universe for us to count to that number, and you think a single hundred is a lot? That's hardly more than a single generation! No, we have a problem. The population has to be trimmed. That was the inspiration of my research. Disease is the natural fire of life. It burns the ground so that life can keep going else we'll kill ourselves. Simple as that."

  
  
  Upon finding out he was doing viral research for dark intentions, he had his professorship revoked. Knowing it was coming, he managed to smuggle and embezzle as much research grant money as he could absconding to an island nation of Guildreim to hide away and continue his work. It was a sinister Isle, and it dragged him deep, deep into trouble. He has his own estate now with lab facilities to continue his research, but he still needs more money. And he has yet to find the secret to immortality.
  
  
  
  
  "Look, I don't know why you're so interested in me. I'm not special. I'm not unique. I simply am. My life was perfectly normal for a child like me. I don't see why it's such a big deal if I don't fit the mold of normal to your standards. To me this is normal. What? No I don't think that's just a subjective opinion. I have no use for subjective anythings. It either is, or it isn't. What's so hard for you people to understand about that. There's no point asking any question that doesn't have a distinct answer. Why? Why what? Why do we need air to breathe? That's just the way it is. If there's no concrete answer, we can spend years chasing something that doesn't exist or will exist in two states for different people. That's why I like science, it simply is. ... Lonely? Of course I don't think I'm lonely! ... What? No. That's preposterous. There are plenty of women in my life. Especially here at the tether. Just growl at them and they open their legs. They're so fucked in the head it's ridiculous. ... Of course that shows I'm not lonely. No it's not because of her. What? ... Go fuck yourself. I'm done. Pfft, lonely. I don't need anyone. I've never needed anyone.... how can I be lonely and miss people if I've never had anyone?"
