October 27th 2017, 5:00pm - 8:00pm

First came the rumors: a small village on the western coast of Kasuria wiped out in a weekend. Arriving merchants found the population to be withered husks. Not only that, but all the fish and crops were similarly withered - as if having decayed for years. Metal was rusted and disintegrating, wood rotted, gems clouded. Nothing was stolen, but nothing was intact.

Next came the ship: a merchant vessel docked at the Tether normally, with the crew remaining aboard for the night. When morning came, no one emerged. As the day wore on, no one emerged. By the following morning, men were dispatched to investigate - only to find the crew as withered husks and the wares they were carrying disintegrating and rotted. The guards reported seeing motion in the faint mid-day shadows, yet found no survivors. When they emerged, patches of their armor were rusted and flaking. The vessel was placed on strictest quarantine.

Last came the reports: each morning as light trickled into the Tether, things were found ruined. Tapestries were tattered, wood rotted, plants wilted. Rumors of a house slave found withered to a husk are unconfirmed. More disturbing are the rumors that motion and movement are apparent in shadowed areas and dark rooms, yet these areas are found empty when investigated by torchlight. Has the Tether become haunted? Is that a ghost ship quarantined at the docks? Or is it something worse?

SOMETHING is happening. SOMETHING has infested the Tether. SOMETHING is in the shadows.

OOC: The Tether has been infested by Shadow Wraiths! These creatures are like locusts, swarming over a location and feeding by drawing the vitality out of their victims. Anything the wraiths touch begins to decay - and while individually they are not particularly powerful, they are highly resistant to anything but direct physical harm. What makes matters worse is that light causes the creatures to become insubstantial - the brighter it is, the less tangible they become. In bright torchlight or daylight, they are effectively not even there. In absolute darkness, they're fully tangible and substantial - and it is only at this point that they can actually be harmed.

In the days leading up to the actual event, feel free to NPC the problems caused by these beasts or base RP off of them! They can safely assumed to be anywhere there is darkness, and they grow more dangerous the darker it is. Their touch decays organic and inorganic material alike. If one is fought in absolute darkness, it will prove not to be particularly powerful - but the things are numerous and have a clear advantage in the dark. Remember that at first, nothing will be known about these creatures or their nature.

The actual fight will take place on the announced date, aboard the "ghost ship" that brought the things to the island in the first place. Due to their infiltrating and ruining all sorts of supplies, the Tether is a bit low on firewood and oil for candles. In one desperate gambit, strategically placed torches are going to be lit everywhere at once - causing the things to rush for the familiar darkness of the ship like moths to a reverse-flame. The party will confront them there in absolute darkness, and will have to cope with the drawbacks this brings.

This will be a dice game, but will not operate via simple rolling to attack. Instead, each player will roll a D20 to attack and the listed outcome will occur. Perhaps you'll slay a handful of the beasts or perhaps you'll run one of your comrades through. All the while, the touch and ichor of the things will be decaying armor and weapons and the very ship itself! The fight ends when all the swarm of shadow wraiths is wiped out...or the party is overwhelmed.

When: The Battle will take place October 27th at 7pm FST. The infestation can be considered to be ongoing until that time.
